Another suggestion is an English class at your local JC. It is VERY helpful when scores are below 45.

I studied using the sample test in the applicant study guide provided by the CHP. http://www.chp.ca.gov/recruiting/officer.html <- Scroll down and select applicant study guide. Hope this may be of some help. There is a lot of information pumped through here and available to you at your disposal on the CHP website. Good luck!

I am going to second that. I have refrained from coming down on some of the applicants that scored low and reported it on this forum. Some of what I read would not be acceptable in a 4th grade writing test.
Those who have the burning desire to be a CHP officer would do well to have a command of writing skill, spelling skills, reading skills and comprehension skills as well as some analytical skills and math ability.
We don't pay trainees close to $4k a month and officers close to $5K or more when they can't read, understand, spell or write.
This is reality, so prepare yourselves or pick and easier career.....

BIGO, this may sound simple but Take Your Time. This is something you can do without any extra classes. I know it has helped me. If you take all the advice from this thread I am sure you will do well your next time around.

Listen to MOM, take a English/Reading/spelling class at your local JC. It is VERY helpful when scores are below 45. The test is not that hard, so if you need help get it.....
If you can't take the time to get prepared then maybe this is not the job for you. 90 % of police work involves writing, if you can't write, spell, read, or use correct grammar you will not make it.

It's like falling off your bike, jut get back on and try again.
I didn't pass the written my first time either... but second time was a charm, don't give up, it's work but it'll be worth it. Take your time and read everything very carefully!

The written is only the tip of the iceberg. The pursuit of this career is not a game. I have very good reason to get a little frustrated because the standard for our cognitive ability has been diminished in primary and secondary institutions.
THE WRITTEN IS ONLY THE BEGINNING!!! PLEASE REMEMBER THAT!!!
The above written statement has many connotations. You will understand once you get past the PAT(another tip of the iceberg), QAP( another tip of the iceberg), and when you face backgrounds.
Your written is so minimal to what you will face in the academy. It is so minimal. If you didn't pass. GET IT DONE!!!!
There is no sugar coating it. There are people who really want this and have gotten through the first two or three phases and have failed.
Those that are CHP Officers, trust me when I tell you they have failed and learned from their failures. They have learned to shave the margin of error. They have been resilient.... AND IT STARTED AT THE WRITTEN.
GOD SPEED TO YOU ALL. BE ENCOURAGED AND BE HONEST WITH YOURSELVES.
