So...how was everyone's first day without their sweethearts? Mine was alright. I have to say it has only been a day but it's getting better as the hours go by. I am so proud of my baby though. It takes a lot of "something" to do what they are doing. I am so excited for our future. Let me know how your days are going and if you need someone to talk to.

Hi Everyone- I am new to this but I wanted to say that although I have been through this sort of process (I was a USMC wife about 10 years ago), it is still hard not being able to see my husband during the week.
He was able to call me and talk with me for about 10 minutes last night just to check up on me, our 11 year old and 3 year old. I was happy to hear that his day went well. Its amazing that this is the largest class CHP has ever had.
It was stressed in the orientation that the significant others give support to their Cadets as their training would be difficult at times. I have to say that I wish that it would have been said at least once that Cadets should also give credit and appreciation to their significant others for taking care of things while they are away.
In no way am I being negative about this experience, but I do applaud (really loud ) all of the Cadets significant others for being brave and taking care of business while they are away at the academy.

Thank you very much for your support and I am really happy that you got to speak to your husband. That is great news. I am just so happy for all of our cadets. It's exciting.
Alenabeana-I know what you mean when you say you haven't been apart longer than 2 nights hehe! My boyfriend and I don't live together like most of you on here but we do talk every night for a good 30 minutes so this is all new to me. I was spoiled with him before and now I am going to become really good at this. Thank you!

my cadet is former military and we've gone through a few deployments so knowing i'll see him this weekend, (and that deployments are over) has made it all pretty easy to get through so far. its only 6 months, only about 4 of actually not seeing them. could be a lot worse. they're not overseas in combat. I have a lot to be thankful for and even though its a dangerous job, it's an HONORABLE one.

I totally agree with you Hezawrad. I don't want you to think that I don't think what my boyfriend or anyone else's cadet is doing at the Academy is important because I do 150%. And trust me I feel sooo lucky that #1-we live fairly close to the academy and #2-he is not in the military and I can see him every weekend. Like I said before my heart goes out to all the families that have loved ones overseas because I don't know how they do it. I sure don't know how I could do it (I would if I had to).
So I just wanted to make sure you didn't take what I said in the wrong context. I am very proud and thankful for everything my cadet is doing and will be doing in the future. But thank you for the reality check about how lucky we are. You are sooo right about that! Good luck with your cadet and hope you see him a lot.

i know you meant well, no one expects us wives to be superwomen and not be effected at all, i was merely offering a bit of perspective and encouragement. we're all proud and hopeful and can get through this!

Thank you very much. You were very helpful. Boy do I wish I was a superwoman right now...oh yea. It's hard but your right, it could be worse. We all need to look on the bright side of things and just be there for our men (and women) when they need it.

I agree...it really could be a lot worse. At least we know they will come home alive and well.....tired and stressed, but still okay. Today was much easier for me...my nieces kept me busy with shopping and going out to eat. I think the more we all stay busy, the easier it will be. I definitely don't want my emotions to affect my husband's success at the academy. It's so funny, because we prayed and hoped for this for such a long time, but I never really thought and processed what it really would be like with him not home. We will all be okay. I'm thankful for the insight from all you wives/girlfriends because it validates my feelings, but also encourages me to stay positive. Let's keep the big picture in mind! Before you know it, our loved ones will be CHP officers!!!! Yay!!!

I agree. That is such an exciting thing to think about. Our lives/futures are going to be amazing! CHP wives! How cute! We can do it together we just all have to be strong for them!

Well I heard from him tonight! YEAH! He sounds like he loves it. I am so happy to hear that. It was amazing to hear his voice and hear the different things they get to do. They have a lot of paper work it seems like this week but it's alright. Next week will probably be the first week of no paperwork so that should be interesting to hear about. Well talk to you guys tomorrow I just thought I would share my GREAT news with you all. I got the phone call I was waiting for. YEAH! I hope you all get one tonight too!

Mine called earlier today too but it was very brief. Told me not to expect a call from him tomorrow as I originally had because they may not have liberty. I was looking fwd to a nice long conversation but something is better than nothing. Hope all of you ladies are hanging in there too!

Hi Everyone!
I didn't hear from my hubby last night either. They must have been really busy.
Does anyone have any fears of job placement? The State is having major problems with the budget and are even considering giving all State employees minimum wage until the budget is passed.

I heard about that but someone mentioned in an earlier thread that CHP might not be affected.

As far as placement goes, I do worry but if it is only a 1 yr assignment before they can transfer back..that might not be too too bad. Staying hopeful.

I worry about placement too- do you know if the 6 months academy counts towards the 1 year?

As far as I know, the 6 months doesn't count toward the 1 year probationary period but I can find out for you. As far as the job placement is concerned, I am not that concerned because I know that my husband will try not to choose places we have talked about not going. We have really talked about this and our choices when they come to be. I think it will be fine.

The academy doesn't count towards one year probation. If you live in a metro area, chances are you are gonna get somewhere fairly close.

The CHP is not paid by the general fund and is protected from this. Happens every time the state budget is late.

I posted a thread with the previous Academy Dream Sheets. This is a good indication of what "usually" appears on the lists. The next few classes may look a little unusual because of the 12 hour shifts starting in some offices. Many officers will be transferring both into and out of offices with 12's. The academy assignments are given out after the officer transfer list is completed. then open spots are given to the academy. Sometimes there are exceptions to this of course.
They do a year of probation (not counting academy time) then can submit a transfer. Some offices they can get to quickly others may take 10 years or more - it's all by seniority.

If you're asking about the one year of probation, no the Academy time doesn't count.

So will the list for CTC III-08 include which offices are on 12's and which are not? If not how will we know, I think that might affect some people's choices of where they want to go...

Just some history on this. This comes up every few years when the legislature is slow or reluctant to pass a budget.
Once you are an officer or a cadet, NOTHING ADVERSE WILL HAPPEN TO YOU PERSONALLY. It is all political and all done with smoke and mirrors far above all of our levels.
I have been through this as a new officer, a seasoned officer and a senior officer and a retiree. My pay has vever been affected one penny.
It's all for the press and the "sky is falling" crowd.
Furthermore, if they ever do make it LITERALLY HAPPEN, the credit union and banks will make you whole until the STINKIN BUDGET GETS PASSED.
It's all POLITICS by the idiots you elect to represent you!

For other state departments and non sworn employees it is very real. Also for school funding. But, Public Safety pay will not be effected

This will be the best place to get that info. No particulars on any of the offices are included on the dream sheets. Possibly watch the APB but because offices can change there probably will never be any "official" list - just like now there is no list of which offices are on a 9/80 Alternate Work Week.
