I have been wearing contacts for about 8 years now. I know for the PAT you have to have been wearing contacts for 1 year or had laser surgery for atleast 1 year. My question is, if I take my PAT with my contacts on and I pass, can I then get laser eye surgery because I already passed the eye exam?

If you get lasik you'll have to wait another 12 months so they can verify that your vision has stabilized. I had lasik done July last year and did my PAT in January. They told me that I would need to have a doctor certify that 12 months had passed and my vision was stable before I could be hired.

I had LASIK surgery done and had to jump through a few hoops before I was approved. It doesn't matter if you passed the eye exam at the PAT with contacts. You'll get another one done during your Medical exam. At that point the SPB medical director will review your medical history and contact you via mail letting you know that you need to send in at least 4 eye exams in the past year with a minimum of 3 months apart from eachother so it can be reviewed to prove your eyes are stable.
After that is done, you'll most likely have to go and do another eye exam twice in one day (paid for by the state).
Once you complete that, and you're good to go, you'll be passed medically.
Just a reference on how long this could take:
I completed my medical May 5 of 2005. I finally cleared medical at the beginning of August of 2005.
That was with my paperwork all in order from the eye exams and such.

I'm not totally up on the medical vision thing, but if I were you, I'd wait until I had the job (i.e. out of the Academy) for LASIK unless there's some reason you need to do it before. It sounds like you can pass the vision, as long as your corrected vision is 20/20, and do introduce LASIK can only add delays.

I have always wanted Lasik. I hate contacts because they bug sometimes.

does anybody know the policy for officers getting Lasik? do they have to be off duty for more days then a normal person, do they have to pass another state eye exam after?
i had also heard that at one time the CHP paid for officers to get it, but not anymore. any news on if this might happen again?

Considering Lasik???
Contact Dr. Rami Zarnegar at Shepard Eye Center in Santa Maria. 800 821-1787 I had an astigmatism and he did LASIK on me. I'm 20/15 now...
I had been debating the procedure for about 3 years... After I had the procedure, I asked myself...Why the hell did I wait soooo long???
