First, I just wanted to say how proud I am of being a part of the CHP family! It truly is an honor to be able to support him through all of this....
I have a question for others that have been through this, I heard Cadets can get an AA degree through Riverside community college when they graduate the academy, does anyone know anything about this? If so how do we go about getting this accomplished?
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you better, we are all excited and nervous about all that is coming.....

Welcome! As it has been explained to me, they can purchase the units they have earned at the academy, but they do not automatically earn an AA degree. This is as of my husband's class, CTC III-07, but I don't think it has changed since then.

My husband is starting on the 21st as well!
We are definitely interested in finding out about the AA degree. Does anybody know if the GI Bill can be used to purchase the units?
Thanks a lot!

Good old Riverside City College, got an AA there in 1972, got a BA from Sac State in 76. BTW these were on the GI bill from the Vietnam period. At that time we did not get college credit for the academy but we should have.
My advise to all is to call Riverside City College admissions and ask about that. If the question is about using the GI Bill to purchase credits, I would direct that to the Veterans Assistance person at Riverside City College. Most, if not all, community colleges have them.
There was a new GI Bill signed into law recently that becomes effective Sept 1, 2008. The processing of new claims will probably lag due to lots of applications. For the latest and most accurate information I would recommend that the veteran or spouse contact the County Veterans Service Office in the county where you live. They will be listed under county offices and they should be able to answer questions on the new GI Bill and how it applies.

American River College in Sacramento will actually come out to the Academy near the end and help cadets enroll and then process the VA claim. It costs around $400-500 but you get 17 credit hours. In theory, you could transfer your previous credits to ARC and get the AA or take the transcripts from ARC and apply them to where you already attend or have a bulk of your credits.
Hope this helps

That's really cool that they can purchase the units they received in the academy. If my hunny didn't already have a degree I would tell him to do that...AWESOME!!

On a related note, if we can get 17 units while at the academy, does this mean we are considered full time students for student loan purposes? If so, can we defer our student loans while at the academy?

Hi,
I woudl contact your loan person, as you can deferr your loan payments while in the academy as you are attending "full"time. There are forms you can fill out online and send in but you have to call and find out what "proof" you will need to supply with the form.

I don't know about using the GI Bill to purchase units, but my chippy was able to get his GI Bill $ for his academy and break in time. He found out about this while on break-in. He may be able to ask his area office (once stationed there) about this.
