SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A highway patrol officer is being hailed as a hero after he saved the life of a child in distress Saturday.
Police said Officer Mike Blacklock was on patrol when he was flagged down by a passing motorist in the 2100 block of North Texas Street.
The motorist advised Blacklock that they were trying to get their 10-month-old son to the emergency room after they said they noticed him choking on something.
Blacklock, who said he noticed the child was blue and not breathing, called medic units and began providing CPR. Blacklock was able to free the child's airway of the obstruction and the child began to breathe on his own.
"Had Officer Blacklock not taken the time to assess the child and provide emergency treatment on the scene, the additional delay of driving to the hospital may very well have caused irreparable damage to the child," Fairfield police Lt. Bunting said.
An ambulance arrived shortly after to provide additional care and it was later determined that the child had been chewing on a plastic lid when a small piece of the lid broke off and became lodged in the child's throat closing the airway.
Officials said Blacklock was recommended for the Fairfield Police Department's Life Saving Medal

That is a great story but in fairness I think he is actually PD not CHP.

I'd be a little panicked... but more so I'd be trying to get some air back into his lungs. Man I need to take a infant CPR Course.

i'd recommend it, but it's hard to judge a parent in that situation. we almost lost our second child while my husband was in the academy. in the middle of it all, i could hardly remember a thing about cpr and wasn't entirely sure of what to do. i've twice been in situations where i needed to attend OTHER kids, but when it was my own kid, man, i panicked BIG time.

i'm grateful for officers like blacklock... 911 sent one stupid sheriff to our house who circled around a couple of times (i was in the street, waving like a madwoman) and then asked if i couldn't just drive our daughter to the hospital myself. thank god i pushed for an fire to roll... her heart stopped on the way to the hospital (they had to use lidocaine and paddles to get her going again) and she ended up in a coma with glasgow coma scores (eight and below) indicating possible death or severe brain injury. she ended up no worse for the wear, but i still harbor bitter feelings for that stupid sheriff, who unfortunately now works in conjuction with my husband.
