I've seen it referred to in several posts, and am wondering what is break in? I did a search for it and came up with several non-related threads.

It's your field training period upon assignment to your first area office

break in...like breaking in a new pair of boots...

first you are all happy and sniff the new leather smell before you put em on...tie the laces nice and snug and feel like you can hike Everest at a light jog...you clomp around in them and realize you may have tied them too tight...maybe that is why there is a little hot spot...but actually it is 'a bridge too far' at this point since you are not even half way to where you were so confidently going...and so you take your new boots off and inspect your now throbbing dawgs...then as if you had an instantaneous brain transplant you think that if you adjust your socks it will make it all better...that somehow the leather will become supple as you put your boots on, but this time you'll lace them looser...anyway, by the end of the day it is nothing but blisters and a new native american nick name, TenderFoot.

...on the other hand...

don't we all have that favorite pair of well broken in boots that fits and feels like glove leather...mmmm  (years late of course)

but I hate breaking them in, and I still have blisters

so, its like that, but more tears...oh, and you're armed
