View Full Version : color vision failure
I dont want to give up.
I failed by color vision test today. Im going to schedule a appt w/ a eye doctor right now.
Ive always had trouble telling shades of colors.
Does anyone know if I can do anything? Any surgeries? I am hoping, but I dont think there's anything I can do.

From what I have heard, that test is pretty hard, even if your not color blind.

was this at the vallejo PAT??? I was there as well and i have great eyes but still had some serious difficulty with the color vision. Sorry to hear you didnt pass but i hope you can find a way to get aroung that.
This was in Benicia, it's probably the same place your thinking of, at the St. Patrick's High. I am thinking of trying again anyway even though I was told there is really nothing I can do. Ive heard it's common in men to have some kind of trouble distinquising color. It just sucked watching soo many people go in and pass while I was sitting there failing.
Im 26 years old I have never looked at a career and wanted to be that person without no doubts. Im really let down. I wanted to be a person with the highest of moral standards helping the public and keeping safety. I wanted to wake up everyday and be proud of myself that I would do anything to help someone that day. I really wanted to be a CHP Officer. I still want this.
The comfort I have is that God made me this way and I won't always be able to understand his plans I may have comfort that they are for my best.
To all of you who are going on with the process I wish you the best, your truely lucky for the opportunity, make the most of it. To any officers reading this thank you for your service. You all have my upmost respect, thank you for being the hero's of our society.

Contact Dr. Rami Zarnegar at Shepard Eye Center in Santa Maria. 800 821-1787 I had an astigmatism and he did LASIK on me. I'm 20/15 now... He may be able to help you out with the color vision thing, if he can't he may be able to connect you with someone who can as he teaches at UCLA...He's great

Ask to re-take and they will give you the Farnsworth-Munsell D-15 test. I too failed the test where they show you the pictures in the book and couldn't see the numbers. They then gave me the above mentioned test, and I passed. (I'm an officer) I hear that 98% of the people who fail the 1st test pass the 2nd. The 2nd was really easy.

Thanks Chipper
I took both tests. The first one I made out some shapes, but not enough. The second though I scored very strangely.
Picture the correct sequence moving one direction in a circle (right to left). My results were zig zag one point from the top of the circle to the bottom and then back to the top. It was a pattern for sure just the wrong one I guess.
I was 100% sure that they were lined up correctly. (coming from these eyes)
Im going to the eye doctor to confirm my vision status and seek possible options.
I can accept that I dont meet the color vision of CHP's requirement.
From what Ive been told though, this is not a condition to cure.
I still have to explore any possible remedy's for this.

If you failed the 2nd test, which it sounds like you did, I do not know of anything you can do. Color Blindness, or deficiency is not something that any surgery, glasses or contacts can fix. If you cannot distinguish basic colors, you will have a hard time working the road as an officer.
I know it sucks hearing this, but you were dealt this hand in life, which means there are other plans for you.;)

Do they give you two different color vision tests?

At the PAT they give you one, its in a book not sure what it is called. Then at medical they give you the same one at the PAT plus the D-15.

So if you fail the color vision test at the PAT, do you then retake it using the D-15?

WRONG. At the PAT we give the one in the book. If you fail that one then we give you the one using the color chips. If you fail that one you are done.
When you take your medical exam your color vision is tested again. Why would they test you for color vision twice at the medical unless you fail the first test again?
I'm not sure what this "bubble test" is that is being discussed. The test in the book is simply identifying objects in the pattern.

From my own experience, my brother, and others i know of down in San Diego were given two of color blind test as well as test your vision at the medical eval.
From my own experience, my brother,I was going to correct you about how it's done at the PAT, but Snowdog answered it.
