 Hi all. Anyone know if there are still plans for a "bigger and better" museum at the Academy? I know that one exists already, but a few years back, work/fundraising was to begin in order to build a new one. Thanks for any info.

Funny you should ask that. I made an inquiry just today about that same subject. When we last visited this subject, a few years ago, there was some concern over keeping CHP at a distance from any fundraising. Those who were making decisions at that time appeared reluctant to continue. It may be time to try again with the proper safeguards. We got to the point where we identified the location, checked the infrastructure, had some preliminary design work done on a building and for some of the exhibits. The next step would be the major fundraisiong needed for working blueprints and actual construction.
The existing museum has some big problems. There is a lot of material in the back room that needs to be conserved and should be displayed in a bigger venue.
Keep your fingers crossed.

A few years back when I was an explorer at the department I currently work for, we took a trip with the gang intervention program students to the CHP academy. I was very impressed with what they had at the museum and the academy itself. It was another one of those I really want to work here moments.

Someday I would really like to take grandchildren (if I ever have children) to a big museum of the CHP and tell them all about the CHP and that I was part of the greatest law enforcement agency ever.

FINGERS CROSSED!

Rick,

A couple of months back I was wondering about the status of the museum too when I posted the below thread. It seems for a brief time someone was offering a crystal encased star to support the building of the museum. I don’t know what happened to those funds or who sponsored the item. The below link is the only information available I could find online about the status of the new museum.

I am retired and working in corporate security. I would be willing to help out anyway I can to get this off the ground again because this is a very worthwhile project and I am afraid the museum will die because of lack of support, concern and politics. The museum is too important to our past and our future. The CHP has a proud history and tradition that must be preserved for future generations.

I did have concerns about the name for the museum would bear because of legislation. I found the naming the museum for one individual politically motivated. I am concern because of the power struggles within the upper ranks may have been the motivating factor in curtailing the building of the museum. The history of this Department was made by the collective hard work, decisions, sacrifices, concerns, efforts and ethics of all its members not just one person. No one person made this Department, we all had a hand in it. (See below similar thread at bottom of this page).

Also, other police museums seem to be thriving in particular, LAPD’s museum. The links for those museums are as follows.

The legislation was done maybe ten years ago which gives the land at the academy for a museum built with private funds. The name is not important, raising the funds is. When we last got together, we had a survey of the area, the infestructure delt with, and a design. Any money left over should still be in an account. The Commish at the time, didn't want to deal with fundraising because the Sac Bee might say something bad. I think I have worked out an answer to that problem and the present bunch seem to be supportive.
Right now we have a few issues to deal with and some other projects that you will hear about in the APB. I will be pushing for the museum though.

you wouldn't have 10 or $12,000,000 laying around, would you?

FYI,

We send a check off to the Museum every year as a donation from our Emergency Vehicle Show. Have been doing so since 1991. Here's a link to the car show info. We'd be honored to have any of you join us. Contact info is on the website.

The museum is currently housed within the admin building at the Academy.
It seems like every time I try to rekindle the project the economy takes a dump. I'm thinking of renaming it the CHP Museum and Savings and Loan to get some federal bailout money.

It is time to resurrect the Museum project. I believe there are funds in an account. However, they would be insufficient to pay for the next steps.

One of the members of my Rotary Club has inquired about the project and wonders if it would be worth his involvement. He is an experienced fundraiser. Does anyone know of a contact that is knowledgeable about the project?

In addition to those already involved, whoever they are, two organizations will have to be involved: the CAHP and the 11-99 Foundation. Those already involved and the leadership of those two organizaitons will have to negotiate creation of a separate tax exempt foundation to raise the funds, create an endowment, raise money, invest it for the endowment, raise money, and, oh yes: raise money. While they are at all that fundraising, they get to provide policy direction and oversite for the management of the museum.

They will need to hire a director to manage and market the Museum. They will also need to hire a curator to manage the collection, and design and change the exhibits.

The musuem will accumulate so much stuff, they will not be able to display and interpret it all at one time. At some point, the management will need to limit the receipt of items that would be duplicates of those already in the collection

Another way to help pay the bills would be a Museum store--which would require a paid manager.

The Sacramento region is full of Museums, with 27 of them belonging to the Sacramento Association of Museums (SAM). The next addition--in about 10 years will be the California Indian Heritage Museum, to be located on riverfront property in--guess where: West Sacramento. Then, there is the planned expansion of the California State Railroad Museum's next unit: The Rail Technology Museum, in the Railyards.

On the first Saturday in February, all the SAM museums promote free admission, including shuttle service among them.

As one can see, there is a lot to be done--including raising money!
