ALHAMBRA, Calif.—A California Highway Patrol officer has shot and killed a woman during an Alhambra traffic stop after she pulled what turned out to be a replica handgun.
Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Aura Sierra says the shooting just off Interstate 10 east of downtown Los Angeles occurred shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Sheriff's investigators remained on the scene Wednesday morning at Hellman and Garfield avenues.
KTLA television says the CHP officer spotted the woman's red BMW speeding on the freeway and made a traffic stop just off the interstate.
Investigators say the woman pulled out what appeared to be a handgun and the CHP officer, fearing for his life, shot her. Sierra says the woman was declared dead at a nearby hospital. The woman's name hasn't been released

Those replica handguns have never been too reliable

I was thinking if someone is looking to get themselves shot, flashing a replica handgun should do the trick.

How crazy do you have to be to pull a fake gun on an armed police officer? Another suicide by cop?

Pulling replica badge, although reprehensible, would have been a safer strategy

Do you ever get used to the media trying to stretch the story? I have a hard time watching the news lately. Bunch of drama queens!
"Since May there has been a rash or police involved shootings..." (apparently rash=3):hitwall:
"all ending with the suspect dieing, and all of them involved the California Highway Patrol."
Sad that a life was lost (how stupid can these people get?), but if it ever comes down to my guy or them- I'm comforted to know he has had the best training to deal with the situation.

Whatever her purpose or motive, this incident will have tragic ramifications for her family and the officer(s) involved.

I pray that peace of mind and acceptance of circumstances will abound on both sides of the issue.

About a year ago I was on a stop at night and as I was walking up on the car I saw a small handgun flash by the right side passengers side window. At about the same moment I cleared leather I realized that it was a 5 YO kid with a toy airsoft pistol. Black plastic gun with a red tip and all. Upon contacting mom in the drivers seat I commenced to a a$$ chewing and explained just how close I was to discharging my weapon into the back seat. Mom said that she forgot that her older kid had left the gun in the back seat and appologized stating "Can't you tell its fake with the red tip on it?". "He likes police officers just wanted to show you his toy gun."

It still makes me think just how bad I would have felt if I would have shot and possibly killed 5 YO kid.

I live a few blocks away.
I heard all the sirens last night too.
I didn't know about this! I just suspected a pursuit.

I'm getting sick of how the media portrays these stories and victims. Is it getting to the point that LE agencies need to start putting up billboards that say if you brandish a gun (real or not) in the presence of a peace officer, it could result in your life being over? Of course that will not deter somebody who is suicidal and that's what they're looking for. Must be tough on officers who have had to discharge their weapons under these kinds of pretenses.

I am thinking that perhaps this woman used the replica gun to flash at the unexpecting public in traffic. If she was under the influence, then she might have just been careless and non-thinking to flash it at an officer. I can't believe this was a suicide by cop unless she was completely sober, In any event, no one will ever be able to ask her "why?" Now yet another officer has to live witih the knowledge that he killed someone because they were stupid. At least he wasn't hurt, physically.

I have two things to tell that officer. First off Nice Shot, secondly you did what it took to go home to your family that night good on you.

After an event like this one, how does the Officer (who shot) usually feel the days/weeks after?

A similar topic has come up on another forum I belong to. It's about open-carry, and the interaction with law enforcement. Brandishing is somewhat different in scope, but the reactions to open carry can be similar.
there was a shooting by either city or county here a few years ago, in which a man was shot reaching for a cell phone. Tragic stuff, but don't move, means DON"T MOVE. If you can hear the command, which he did..but ignored, you shouldn't move. Few people die from being still for a few moments as opposed to, well.....

Very well put, the media has a funny way of making the good guys look guilty. Thankfully the officer made it home to his family that night.

No two people are alike, so it's impossible to answer that question with any kind of accuracy.

Without going into detail, suffice it to say that any officer-involved shooting is a highly stressful incident. It's not like on tv where the make-believe cops blow six people away, go hang their belt up in their locker, stroll out of the station and go have a drink with their buddies with a bevy of beautiful blondes hanging all over them.

They're not stretching the story. They're just commenting on what marksmen the CHP are.

My interpretation is:

"In all of the cases (3), the CHP Officers WENT HOME TO THEIR FAMILY!!! What is wrong with that????"

No offense (swashbuckler1998), but comments like that, aren't particularly appropriate... (the  part...)

I think it was just fortunate, that neither officer was physically injured.

I wish them a speedy return to the field, should they so choose.

Replicas are very hard to deal with.

But when I worked in E. Palo Alto doing my DRE certifications, I saw an officer safety bulletin posted on the EPA PD office. There was a photo of a handgun, a real hand gun, that had been painted with bright flouresent colors to intentionally make it look like a water pistol. The gangsters were doing this just so officers would hesitate for a moment while they decided if the gun was real or not. Unless you picked up the gun, or saw it being fired, you would think it was a plastic water gun.

I got a copy of the poster and put it up at the Hayward area office. I don't know if it is still there.
