Well, I did not go to the this academy but I was glad to see them build it in Yolo County since I was a TO in the Woodland office. I used to work a shift in W. Sacramento and then stop off at the academy to work out in the gym and swim some laps in the pool. It was usually quiet and not busy when I went by.
I also ended up in a study group for the sergeant's test at the academy and they gave mock orals there. It must have been a good group. As I recall I was #6 on the list and they five in front of me were from HQ or the academy.
It still gives me a sense of pride to visit there. I recently stopped up there and donated all the California Highway Patrolman magazines I had kept from 1966 through 2000 and something when they quiet publishing.
I always take a minute to stop at the memorial and I enjoy stopping at the store and seeing the plaques from all the classes.

For some reason Im getting this uncontrolled urge to check and see if I have 6 blue cards!
I like that place as much as I like yellow snow. I like that place as much as I like Roseanne Bahr in a thong. I like that place as much as I liked finding out the truth about Santa Claus..........actually that place wasn't that bad.

It sure wasnt fun, but I do have some fond memories from my home away from home. As I looked at the pics though, I couldnt help but chant to myself.... "I wanna be a highway ranger, I wanna live a life of danger...."
I guess I'm one of the odd ones - I actually had fun at the Academy, once I adapted to Academy life. Had a good roommate and quad mates, and actually enjoyed the marching, camaraderie, etc. Heck, I even enjoyed PT (in a weird, twisted way) once I got in shape and it quit killing me every morning!
Going back up for in-service (errrr, Officer's Forum) and other classes isn't quite as much fun - but I still like the gestalt of the place, and the chow has gotten a ***LOT*** better over the years! No more "Spanish Franks", and the "EVOC Surprise" isn't as nasty as it used to be. Jean-Paul (the head cook) actually does a pretty darn good job with chow nowadays.

About the swimming pool picture...is tha tthe tower I've heard cadets have to jump off of? That's not nearly as high as what I pictured ater an officer described it to me. I'm actually finding these pictures calming because of that.

The four guys from Newhall sure brought back some memories. How well I remember the policy of having to write a memorandum if you broke the seal on a shotgun.......................
Gore and Frago were both from Merced County and their families still come to the police memorial service we have every year.
Seems like it was just yesterday................some things never fade:cry:

Thats cool! I wondered why they say to pack a bathing suit. I thought maybe we would be taking field trips to the beach...oh well.

I believe they call it a Deep Water Recovery Tank, or something along those lines. They were not allowed to budget for a swimming pool.

Pupdog,
I'd say the tower is about 15-18 feet tall. It's not "that" bad, except for climbing it dripping wet (where you worry about slipping)....the worst part is when you're on the damn thing - you have no option really but to jump. The jump itself is fun - seems to last forever.
I jumped once, and that was enough for me - never again. But it wasn't terrifying...it was simply one of those "challenge yourself" things I had to do........helped a bit with the fear of heights thing.
Your first jump will be the worst, after that, I imagine it gets easier. You'll be just fine. And if you aren't, I'm sure someone would be happy to give you a good push!
Good luck to you!

I believe they call it a Deep Water Recovery Tank, or something along those lines. They were not allowed to budget for a swimming pool.
Additional trivia: Pool is something like 3 feet shy of the length of a NCAA/Olympic regulation length competition pool, simply for the fact that if it were the correct length, the CHP would have had to open it to events (because we're a public agency). Can you imagine the chaos that would ensue, having a swim meet, two academy classes, and various in services going on at the same time?
Whee!
IIRC, the diving tower is 3 meters - just over 10 feet. No big deal at all, it's pretty much the same height as a "high dive" at any public pool. xMait and cal911gal are right - it's actually called the "Water Safety Tank", and it is either 3 feet or 1 meter short of full Olympic size. The reasons were as cal911gal stated, plus as xMait stated, the Department wasn't allowed to budget for a "swimming pool". There is an observation area belowdecks with a glass window which allows you to see underwater. At one time (many years ago), the Department tried using a submerged mockup car to practice underwater vehicle rescues, but quickly discovered that the mockup car contaminated the water too much.

10ft. that's it!? lol, i am afraid of heights, but have learned over time the best way to control the fear is by doing things that involve it. for anybody that has never jumped 10ft. into water, well it isn't that big a deal nor will you hurt yourself. over the years i have jumped off of olympic diving platforms(like 30ft i think) and also done cliff jumping. the first jump/step is a pain in the butt to do, but once you are in the air it is a ton of fun and you can't wait to go again
