Earlier this evening, while my dad was reviewing some plans (including plans for a new rest area/CHP station) the topic of 'COZEEP' came up.

Alright - How do you guys do it? How do you guys make it through the night!!??

Coffee, conversation with your partner, and enforcement action. Look for DUI drivers, write speed citations & cone crossing fools (21367(c) VC not 2818 VC) - making sure to put in the "in a construction zone" so the fine is double, and keep the workers safe. It can be a busy night when you're working the zone and not stationary. Time flies by when you're having fun.

COZEEP = Construction Zone Enhanced Enforcement Program.

Is COZEEP when there are parked CHP cars with lights on near construction zones?

If you were to see a Deuce go by, do you pursue or radio another unit so you don't leave your post?

Thx BoySergeant, I was always wondering what the heck COZEEP stood for... I knew it was construction safety enforcement, but didn't know what the acronym was.

Now, what's the other long ***EEP one called? MAZEEP?

I should know, as far as I am in the process, but it seems to have slipped my mind.

EDIT: I found it upon using a great tool called 'search'... works wonders.

MAZEEP = Maintenance Zone Enhanced Enforcement Patrol
COZEEP = Construction Zone Enhanced Enforcement Patrol

So, what's a maintenance zone?

Is that when Cal-Trans replaces all the signs, or does painting on the freeway, graffiti removal, etc?

AmbuDriver03: It is a Program, not a patrol (although that is what we do) and you understand the concept accurately.

Code349: Yes, you often see CHP vehicles stationary in the closure looking for errant drivers and those drivers that need to "speak with a CHP officer" about their driving habits. I enjoy this aspect...

I hope you aren't in Springs. Deuce=DUI/Errant Driver. It is the same type of driver I went 10-15 with tonight. As to the second part of your statement, I'll refer to the Occupational Safety Poster I created when I was in Central Los Angeles, "Your Closure Is Not A Drive In Theatre!"

How Embarrassing.

A couple of years ago, an officer in LA was working a COZEEP assignment, sitting inside a closure on the Harbor Freeway. He looked in his rearview mirror in time to see a big rig blow through the cones from the freeway lanes and enter the closure. The big rig struck the sound wall a couple hundred feet behind him and caught fire as it slid along it - headed right toward the officer's car. He put it in gear and got out of the way, and the big rig came through, with the tractor fully engulfed in flames, right where the officer had been sitting. The big rig came to rest a couple hundred feet further down, and the driver burned to death in the tractor.

If the officer had been watching DVD's / text messaging / playing a Game Boy, etc., rather than keeping an eye on traffic behind him, he would have died right along with the truck driver.

I know of whom you speak. I was working that day. I recall it being an early AM (it was daylight already) and was a Sat or Sun. I remember asking him how in the hell he was so quick and made it out of there. Paying attention. It's tempting to slack off and think you're not really on patrol but in reality you're a lot more like a sitting duck.

I'm sorry but...Anyone who would be watching a DVD or some other similar activity while they were in my employ instead of doing the job they were being paid for (protecting the construction workers) would have his/her ass in a sling BIG TIME!!!:tape:

Yep, that's exactly the one I'm talking about. VERY close call.

Stuff like that just further goes to reinforce the point that there's no such thing as "routine patrol" or a "routine stop" or "routine call". Considering anything "routine" is one of the most dangerous assumptions you can make in this career.

This has to do with paying attention even when doing cozeep. An Ohio State Trooper was facing westbound on the eastbound lanes of the Ohio Turnpike with his lights on trying to slow traffic for an accident ahead when a semi tractor trailer almost hits the Patrol cruiser head-on.

Regarding COZEEP....just for information......statistics actually have been shown that a stationary unit with lights on actually reduces traffic accidents in work zones. Just from people traveling at 65 mph instead of 80 mph, and they are paying much closer attention to their driving while approaching and passing a CHP unit keeps them from crashing. It defineatley makes it safer for the guys working out there!:!:

I wont do the DVD player, but an Ipod plugged into the laptop is a must and makes the time go by.

Everytime i work a cozeep or mazeep i get at least one dummy doing something stupid (DUI, using a closed on / off ramp, passing in the closed lanes etc.)
