Congrats to all who made it. Remember this is only the beginning of a long career. The Academy is ONLY 6 MONTHS of that career. Do not quit because you had your feeling hurt by the staff office. Do not quit for minor booboos, you should not leave there unless bones are sticking through your skin and even then have to be dragged out. Keep your heads up, work together and enjoy this time. Good luck.

Yeeeeeaaaah, we don't call it that.
We have evolved as an agency and have left draconian terms such as Black Monday behind. For future reference the first day at the academy is known as Sunshine and Light Monday. So I'm going to need you to go ahead and call it by the new name from now on, mmmk. That would be great.
Good luck to you all.

This posting was a complete eye opener for me. I can't even explain the emotions running through my body right now. Seeing that you future "Cadets" are recieving invites makes me realize how soon graduation is. It's hard to believe that we started this journey 5 months ago (not including the year of the application process). Believe it or not time really does fly.
Stay strong and keep motivated no matter what. All of you can do this if you set your mind to it. Now get out there and start training. You will never be prepared enough but you may as well try. "Sunshine and Light Monday" will be something you will end up laughing about at the end. Remember: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I sure haven't heard of any Cadet deaths (lately, jk!).
Have an outstanding stay at Camp Snoopy.

curious though, I noticed u forgot to put down that you passed the CVSA portion of the app process...or am I mistaken, did u get it waived???!
Also, when did u apply and were all of your references contacted by via phone and/or mail? One more; did you receive the letter prior to the final interview?< cuz I think you forgot to put that down as well. Thanks.
Again congrats, now its time for the challenging stuff! You can do it!

Whoa now, I think is signature is long enough already. The CVSA and final interview would fall under the Background Investigation.

Alpha Recon, that is exactly how I felt the day I received my packet over seven years ago. Reading you post gave me flashbacks…..
(My flashback) ---At the time, I was a supervisor for a construction company. I was supervising the largest job I had ever done. I was in charge of over 150 construction employees almost 300 miles away from home. My wife called me, told me I had received the packet and read every word to me over the phone. My report date was only five weeks away! I was so fired up I could hardly sleep. When I did sleep, I dreamt about the academy (even though I had never seen it). When I didn’t sleep I was looking through my packet material over and over again. For the next four weeks I delegated supervision duties to a couple of my foremen. How could I supervise? It was time to get ready for the academy! I was staying in a hotel room most of the time because I was so far away from home. I would go jogging twice a day (big feat for me) and tried my best to eat healthy. I bought a few inspirational books and read those during the day. The books helped mentally prepare me for the academy.
I told my boss (the owner) I was going to quit the day I received the letter. I gave him a four week notice. On my last day, he made the 300 mile drive to the job site and took me out to lunch. He asked me what it would take to keep me. I told him “I appreciate everything you have done for me over the years, but there is nothing you could offer that would make me stay.” He congratulated me and told me I would have a job if things didn’t pan out. I quit one week before the academy.
Thankfully my wife was gathering the things I needed while I was away. I spent the week before the academy going over everything a hundred times. I was excited as hell!! I drove to Sacramento the day before “Black Monday”. I got a room at the Harbor Inn not far from the academy. When I looked out the hotel window, I could see what I thought might be cadets taking bags out of their cars and up to their rooms. I figured I would walk out and sit by the pool. I was immediately approached by one of the cadets. As we talked, several other cadets gathered around. We all shared stories of what we had heard about the academy (we didn’t have chpforums.com back then). We were clueless. I still talk to some of those guys to this day. One of the cadets (later officer), Robert Dickey, became one of my best friends. We ended up becoming graveyard partners in Central Los Angeles together and had a blast fumbling through the first 15 months together. He got his transfer out of Central LA before I did. I was so jealous. I talked to him on almost a weekly basis for the next couple of years. Even though he lived 400 miles away, he made a point to call and meet for dinner if he was driving through the area. For those of you that don’t know, he was the 211th officer killed in the line of duty…….he is and always will be missed.
Showing up at the academy that first day was stressful, but it was a dream come true. I grew up in a town of only 2000 people. My high school graduating class only had 42 students. To me, the academy was absolutely amazing!
Show up to the academy ready for battle. Show up mentally and physically prepared. Within the first couple of weeks, people will quit. The novelty of the academy will wear off the first week. You will miss the big things…..like your family. You will also miss the little things like going to a movie and grabbing a bite to eat. Its only six months long and truly is and adventure. Don’t quit!
While you are laying in you bunk bed at night missing your family and dreading the four mile run, marching, tests, classes or boxing the next morning; remember how excited and happy you feel now…..DON’T QUIT!! At the end of your 30 year career, after saving an unknown amount of lives, you will look back at your academy days and remember them fondly with pride. However, If you quit, you will regret it for the rest of your life.
Good luck CTC III-08!!

WOW HwyChaser!!
I would like to think you very much for that very insightful, motivating, and inspiring post! Also, would like to thank you for sharing your experiences of before, during and after your stay at the Academy. Reading everything you had to say only gives me that much more heart, and desire to push past any, and every obstacle that may come my way during the course of what some would call (including myself) the toughest challenge in my life thus far. Thank you, and thank you to all.

Well i just had my post Lasik eye exam, which was the last thing i needed to finish in the hiring processes. Hopefully i'll get my academy invitation within the next few weeks once my eye exam results are received.
Any idea on if there is a certain date when the invitation stop getting sent out, or is it just until when ever enough invitations have been sent out to fill the class?
snowdog
06-03-2008, 05:09 PM
The invitations will stop going out once they have achieved their desired target. As I understand, the class is filling up pretty quick due to the hard work of recruiters, background investigators, a good working relationship with the medical facilities and State psychologists but most of the credit has to go to the folks at CHU.

FayeValentine thanks for getting the list going. I believe it is tradition for the cadets to have a dinner the night before Black Monday. From previous posts it looks like the dinner is usually at the Hard Rock Cafe or the Spaghetti Factory. Both appear to have banquet rooms big enough to accommodate a group of 30+ which I understand is how many people showed at the last dinner. Anyone out there have any thoughts on where we want to have ours? Of course, if someone wants to chime in with more options, please feel free.

I think everyone goes through the "shoulda, coulda, woulda" mentality during the process, especially after the QAP ( at least I did). I left my QAP interview feeling the same way, just stay positive and focused on your goal. Be patient, no sense in worrying about something before you know the outcome. Good Luck.

I don't think that the psych doctor can hint that you made it, since he is not the one that makes the decision. It took me about a month to hear anything after I had my psych. What my psych doctor told me and from what I've heard from others, "No news is good news".

Just curious about this quote because I was told that the CHP doesn't determine if you pass or fail the psych. I was advised that Dr evaluates applicants and determines if they qualify within certain guidelines, then they notify CHP. Can anyone else share what they have been told. Although I have taken psych tests in the past for other agencies and always past, it would be interesting to know who exactly determines the pass/fail.
Thanks!

I am so happy for all of you --the requirements to be CHP are strict, which means you are the cream of the crop! Now, just be patient and kind to yourselves when you are training at the Academy. Just keep in mind that proud graduation day awaiting you.
I think it's fantastic that you have this great place to come with your many questions for those with the wisdom and advice to help you through the steps. I'm sure they all remember well their anticipation and feelings of insecurity at times in the beginning. After you are out there in your first jobs, you will come back to do reports, full of stories to tell of the unbelievable things you see from day to day, and they will smile and nod knowingly as they too remember those first times out there with the unbelievable public. Onward and Upward!

Hmmm....I have thought about this myself several times, it seems I will be in the unfortunate position of having really short notice for July or a lot of notice for November. It's nice to know that I have completed everything that has been asked of me and now it is out of my hands....I do have an unsympathetic employer who would most likely not keep me employed all the way to November, now that it is out of the bag that I am looking elsewhere. So, yes, I guess at this point July would be best- atleast monetarily.

Also, for those that have the packet. I was told you need 2 types of shoes, 1 for the gym (cross trainers) and 1 for running (running shoes), is this true. They are also supposed to be white from what I was told, just FYI so you dont stand out. Also, all of the cadets in the pics on the chp webpage have white shoes. Can anyone help or confirm???

As far as I know everyone has a final interview with there BI - however I'm sure your BI will let you know how your process is going to work out.

While I don't have a packet yet, I do know that you will need court shoes with non-marking soles, and good running shoes. I don't think the color matters as much as having them work for your feet and stride. But I know I will be buying new running shoes; as the ones I have at home are pink. blue, and green camo  - those types of colors probably won't do you any favors at the academy!

Non-marking court shoes, I bought some cheap white Nike's, they have a lot of support around the ankle. As far as running shoes I went with the Brooks "Beast" white shoe, they only specialize in running shoes and I'm extremely happy with them. You can find them at any high end sports store such as Sports Chalet.

The packet simply says that you need a pair of "athletic" shoes and a pair of "court shoes." The court shoes must have non-abrasive soles so as not to mark or discolor the gym floor. Nothing is said in the packet about the required color of the shoes. That said, conformity should be your aim so I would avoid the hot pink camouflage Asics.

Actually not completely true. It says non-abrasive white soles. It does not say anything else about color but the court shoes have to be white on the bottom.

All you need are white non-marking court shoes. When I was there a lot of cadets used New Balance. Now as far as the running shoes go don't worry about the color, just make sure you buy a good pair of shoes. I had a pair of red and white Brooks running shoes that worked great for me. It would actually be a good idea to go to a shoe store that specializes in running shoes, this way they can get the right shoe for you.

Actually the "white soles" reference is an e.g. to the court shoes requirement along with other e.g. examples such as "basketball, racquetball, or aerobic-type.'' I do not read this reference to mean that the soles must be all white as further evidenced by the fact that in every academy video I have seen the court shoes have had multicolored soles. Maybe a current cadet can clear this up.

Yeah that would be best if someone would clear it up. When I read that it seems like it must be a requirement for the shoe. It would just be weird grammar to write a list putting the or in there as if to finish the list but then continue it with another example. All I know is I'm going to be looking for one with white soles just to be on the safe side.

I've read alot of post from the previous classes and alot of people seemed to go with court shoes that have the gum soles, stating that they stick better to the gym floor/mats.

Great Choice. I have the same pair. Asics also makes great running shoes, although they do tend run narrow in the toe-box (Great for those narrow feet like myself). Make sure you get the pair that fits you. Personally I love the Landreth's, but I can't run a mile in GT2130's (one of the their most popular shoes).
Fleet Feet in Sacramento/Davis/Ect is a great place to get "fitted".

My psych interview is on Monday the 14th. Is there any way that I might be invited to the July academy? Or should I just plan on the November academy? Either way I'm getting myself in the mindset that I might possibly be leaving in a few weeks.

Enough invitations, and then some, have been sent out to fill CTC III-08 with 240 cadets. They are just waiting for enough replies to make it 240 so it's first come first serve for those folks.
Look at it this way. West Sacramento is so much nicer in the winter. The heat, mosquitoes and humidity were killer last night during the Valley Division orientation.

Yeah it was horrible, my wife and I were sweating like crazy on the tour of the Academy Grounds. But I am glad that I am attending the CTC III-08 , I'm used to the heat being that I work for a general contractor, but the smoke is a bit much, my boss told us to go home today since it was so bad.

Does anyone know when the bulk of the people who received an invitation for CTC III started the process? I started last year this month passed everything the first time and still am waiting and watching people pass me by that started the process in Feb. Any ideas?

I applied Jan 16, took my written Feb 2nd, but i'm also 23, and had a squeaky clean background.
The older you are, the more places you've lived, the more jobs you've held, etc... all factor in your background... I gather you're still in backgrounds?
If you're done with backgrounds... call your B.I. maybe something got lost? idk... wouldn't hurt to talk to him/her.

Passed background, along with medical and my psych. I just know five or so people that i went through the testing process with back in 2007 that are in the same position, just don't understand with millions of dollars being spent on "Now Hiring Campaigns" why people done with the process are not being utilized. Last unreturned phone call to my B.I was three weeks ago, must be busy!

I know this must be in the forums some place, but...what does the packet say about boots? I heard its the Rocky 5066's. I want to be sure and I want to be prepared in case I get my packet at the last minute. Also, does it say 2 dress suits are needed, or one??? Thanks for the information...still hoping. :noidea:

I have the Rocky 5066s, and You only need ONE suit, just have an extra dress shirt/tie because if your cadet uniforms aren't ready, then you'll be wearing your suit for a few days (in classroom) until the cadet uniform is ready. (This is information I obtained from My Background Investigator)

I have been reading this website for some time now and it has helped me understand many things which I did not want to bother asking my BI. Thank you for all the helpful information. This website is a nice resource.
For a while it seemed like I had a slim chance of making it into CTC III 2008. Although I was unable to make it into this one, hopefully I will be meeting you all as one of your Jr. Cadets in the very near future when the climate becomes a bit colder. Congratulations to everyone going to CTC III 2008.

Your process is done? And you don't know if you've been DQ'd or are being invited to the Academy?! Something doesn't sound right.
Send me a private email bud and I'll look into it.

Well, I had my Psych about 3 weeks ago...SPB says my psych is still not processed yet. Is it possible I still might make the CTC III-08? I know I have less than a week, just wondering if anyone knows anyone this has happened to. Maybe CTC IV-09. Either way, I cant wait!!!

No. As far as I am concerned, its the more the merrier! The restaurant may need to get a little creative with seating if we get too many but I am sure they can work it out. If you would like to attend the dinner, please PM today with the number of people in your party and I will send you the details. See everyone tomorrow.
