A California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed this morning on Highway 99 just north of Modesto, and authorities are asking Bay Area motorists to be on the lookout for the suspect's vehicle.
The car, which may have been spotted in Oakland this morning, is described as a dark green 1990 Nissan Maxima with a black top, a license plate number of 5KWA335, a broken right taillight and a dented right rear core panel, according to the CHP.
The highway patrol has identified two potential suspects in the case. One man is Columbus Allen, 30, who is described as a black man with black hair, brown eyes, about 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 200 pounds. The other is Oscar Lee Allen, 40, who is described as a black man with black hair, brown eyes, about 5 feet 10 inches and weighing 195 pounds.
The six-year officer, a Ripon resident whose identity was not released, was shot during a traffic stop at about 4:40 a.m., said CHP Officer Brian Land.
All northbound lanes of Highway 99 between Modesto and Salida have been shut down.
Anyone with information is asked to call 911.

RIPON - Police say a man they're questioning a man described as a "person of interest" after a California Highway Patrol officer was shot and killed near Modesto early Friday morning.
Authorities say the man walked into the Stockton Police Department about four hours after Officer Earl Scott was gunned down a little before 5:00 this morning during a traffic stop on Highway 99 in Ripon.
Investigators aren't saying if the man who turned himself in is believed to be the gunman.
Authorities are still looking for a dark green 1990 Nissan Maxima with California license plates "5KWA335" in connection to the shooting.
The CHP says Officer's Scott body was found by a passing motorist, who then called police.
Sunday would have marked Scott's fifth-year as a CHP officer.

Just had another thought....Could this Officer have been driving to or from work causing him to be alone? I'm sure the suspect will be caught very soon.
The officer had a partner that night, but at 4am they were allowed to go solo. So, he dropped his partner off at the office to catch up on some paper work and his partner (the one that was killed) said that he was going to sweep the beat and see if he could give out some speeding tickets.

Isn't 0400 a little early to be solo (still two hours from daybreak)or is that SOP?.....I've got a feeling I'm crossing into that Officer safety issue but just thought I'd ask.

I guess it depends on the office policy, but my brother said at his last office that it was 0400, but he would have to check on the current policy at his office (Modesto), but GREAT question.......

Earl Scott was my classmate at the academy. Although he stayed up north after graduation, I remember him as a very sharp guy. We were a small class and even though I was in A company and he was in B, we were combined for alot of instruction. He was a kind person and always had a positive attitude. I know he is going to be missed. My prayers are with his family.

There's a special place in heaven for animals, children, and those who left us while selflessly protecting the entire population.
Earl was my room mate at the academy and we got along great. He was pretty funny, smart and hated PT. We always watched DVDs on his laptop at night and he would bring in supplies of gatorade and candy that we would hide in our room. He be-friended one of the house keeper ladies who would clean our dorm for us and make sure we ddn't get any gigs on inspections. We will all miss him!

A Part of America Died Today
Somebody killed a policeman today, and a part of America died. A piece of our country he swore to protect will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court, with counsel demanding his rights, while a young widowed mother must work for her kids and spend alone many long nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield, too, just as if he had gone off to war. Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half-mast, to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today. It happened in your town or mine. While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors, a cop put his life on the line.
Now, his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street, and he stands at each new rookie's side. He answered the call and gave us his all, and a part of America died.

Something we always post when a brother falls in the NYPD. My heart felt condolences to his family, his extended family at the CHP and to his partner.
The policeman stood in the face of god,
which must always come to pass.
We hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass.
"step forward now policeman. How shall i deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek? To my church, have you always been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "no, lord I guess I ain't, because those of us who carry badges can't always be saints.
I've had to work most Sunday's, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes i've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.
But i never took a penny, that wasn't mine to keep.
Though i worked a lot of overtime when the bills just got to steep.
And i never passed a cry for help, though at times i shook with fear. and sometimes, god forgive me, i've wept unmanly tears.
I know i don't deserve a place, among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm there fears.
If you've a place for me here, lord, it need'nt be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don't ill understand.
There was silence all around the throne, where the saints have often trod, as the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his god.
"Step forward now policeman, you have borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on heavens streets,
YOU HAVE DONE YOUR TIME IN HELL".
Rest in Peace Brother. See you on the other side someday.

This has become sickening. What the hell warrants the cold blooded murder of an officer? Was this punk a third striker, in a car loaded with drugs or what? I just don?t get it, because even if he was afraid of going to prison before this, now he will rot there. Time will only tell his motive, but this has to stop. What?s society coming to anyway, when these thugs think they can get away with this?
This may seem childish, but this makes me wonder how CA Dept of Corrections can continue to use the phase, ?We walk the toughest beat in the state!? Comm. Brown stated only one other agency (not CDC) in America has lost more officers in the line of duty than the CHP. Five KIA in five months is unacceptable, please be sure to do all you can do to go home each night. Our job appears to be getting more dangerous by the day, and some in society could care less. God be with us all?

Roaddawg........
All Departments have their mottos, My father retired from CDC...although its not very glamorous, Its not an easy job by any means. Although not killed very often, they are continually 245'd, and gassed....and several have retired because of contracting Hep and other nasties....and I know several personally who have had hits put out on them....I remember as a kid having DOJ agents sitting in our livingroom for a couple nights regarding a hit put out on my dad.
We are all in this together. Im assuming your a CHP officer, you know as well as I do, those dirtbags wold have done the same thing to anyone of us regardless of the color of our uniform. I was on duty when the officer was killed, and 99 runs through my beat. I couldnt help but think I could have easily been the one to stop it. I do think its silly that your guy's staffing has remained the same since what.....the 60's? The CHP officers always stop for me when Im on a stop, Its nice to see two of you guys get out of the unit at 2 am out on I-5 and Nees when Im out with some pranoid parolee in a car.
Reest in Peace brother.

Flying P? I will just say I respectfully disagree that CDC is at the same level as us, statistics prove otherwise. I would gladly debate this with you in another thread, as I don?t want to taint this one. My comment was made more out of anger and sorrow for Earl Scott, and the lack of respect law enforcement receives from many in today?s society.
God bless the Scott family.

I agree that way too many officers, especially CHP it seems, are getting hurt or killed. I get angry every time something like this happens and it pisses me off even more when the media and the general public don't take more steps to capture and punish the animals that would do something like this. Every citizen should be outraged that someone would hurt a person who is protecting the people of the USA.
Be strong, be safe. Best wishes to all officers and especially this officers friends and family.
good luck...be safe

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face
"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years
The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind
I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

Do CHP have In Car Video?
Cameron, I will be there. Don't know the details yet though.

PS - only a couple of our cars have video Slattery. Are you a dirt bike fan Slattery? I know slightly off-topic.
Cameron, they sent out an MIS yesterday detailing when and where to be for the funeral. If your not an offficer, go by or call the office to get directions. I'm involved in the service and have to be there by 0830 so after I heard that I didn't pay attention to anything else as far as times. Usually the media will say when and where the service is.
Has anybody else heard anymore details concerning the circumstances of the shooting? I know some but wonder if they have released anymore information.
I know they are usually pretty tight lipped about this stuff but we always want to know

It was a very powerful feeling to see this procession.
The form-up of vehicles began at the Modesto Junior College West campus. The parking lots gradually filled to capacity with black and white vehicles from all over the state. News helicopters began to circle overhead. A Sheriff Department helicopter appeared overhead and began an orbit of the area. It seemed as though the SO helicopter was keeping the news 'copters from getting too low, or too close.
There were literally hundreds of law enforcement officers at this memorial. I've never seen anything like it. Half the officers were able to get inside the church before it was filled, and the other half stayed outside and mingled during the service. There were dozens, if not hundreds, of motor officers and their rides. I walked among them, they were all checking out each other's motorcycles and swapping stories about their departments.
It seemed that every agency in the state was represented. I saw corrections officers, state park officers, national park officers, city officers, county deputies, transit police, EMT agencies, fire departments. Las Vegas PD was represented there. And, of course, the Highway Patrol had a huge number of Officers there.
There was a very long line of law enforcement officers wearing uniforms of many different styles and colors. They were all waiting to go inside the church. People in the line and in the crowd were talking, but very quietly. As they all waited, some members of one PD's color guard walked across the street to join the line. The steel in the soles of their shoes made a loud "CLICK, CLICK, CLICK" as they crossed the street. Every head in line turned to look, and the color guard all became a bit red.
I saw some LE agencies wearing berets with their uniforms. I'd never seen any agency do that before.
The general feeling among the CHP Officers I spoke to seemed to be this: Sad, but quietly pissed off. Too many brother Officers have fallen in too short a time.
Anyway, pardon this long narrative, but these were my impressions of the memorial. Just thought I'd share.
Cameron,
That was a great summation. It was truly a moving service and procession. Yes there were hundreds of motors and hundreds of cars. I was near the lead in the motor procession and as we arrived at the church we could still see the procession proceeding thru town. This went on for over an hour. The service itself was, as usual, very moving. The photo collage set to music always brings tears to my eyes. There were some very powerful speakers. The last one, who was Scotts 2nd phase FTO, was in my opinion the best. Again another tear in my eye.
I personally did not know Earl Scott but its easy to "personalize" these services.
RIP brother, Tom

Is it just me, or is everyone moved more than usual by Officer Scott's death? Since he died, I've had MANY (at least 50% saturday, about 40% sunday, and a few during the week) customers come through here who, out of the blue with no idea that they are in the presence of someone in the process, mention him! Has this gotten more publicity? Their conversations tell me that cops are finally getting some more respect, but it irks me to think that this is the cost of it. Or that if he or his partner had the chance to return fire, there would be the usual outcry.
Thanks for the link to the pictures, and for the summary of the procession & service.
