View Full Version : Allergies meds?
I can't be the only person here that has rather epic allergies this time of year. What does everyone take? I used to take Claratin but I seem to have built up an immunity to it. I'm trying Zyrtec now and I hope that works but I'm not holding my breath.

Another to consider is generic Loratadine, 24-hour non-drowsy, OTC. Doc recommended it (I know, sounds like a commercial) but it has worked for me two years, now).

Same boat as you I am hyper sensitive to environmental allergies. With my allergy doctor I have found that a combination of Claritin and Singulair to be extremely effective at keeping them in check. I take these each once daily. For those extreme days I have to take Benadryl for relief but after that its nighty night time.

My allergies are insane as well. I have been using Zyrtec and Zyrtec-D. My ENT put me on a nasal spray called Nasarel and that helps, too. I hate nasal sprays, eye drops, etc., but I cannot deny how much it has helped. Have you ever had an allergy test to see what exactly you are allergic to?

Get to an allergist, get tested and get them under control. The last thing you want in the academy and/or on the job is a runny, snotty nose, watery and itchy eyes, and sneezing.
I went through the desensitization process for 4 years and it was one of the best things I ever did (along with Lasik surgery).

4 psudephed and 3 ibuprophen in the morning (doc says a max of 24 psuedephed a day - same dosage as Claritin). Hate Claritin, gives me medicine head. But so does mega doses of psuedephed.
Easy solution: Kenalog (sp?) injection every 3 to 4 months! And have that Honeydo list handy!!!! Whewho!!! Yeah, great stuff that kenalog. 12 years of fighting this crap. Can't wait to leave this state.

This is the best advice. People react differently to meds, so self-medicating can be a long process of trial and error. I know this first hand. After I went to an allergist, he put me on Allegra, which works just fine. I also take flonase, a nasal steroid. Working in the central valley, if you can live without having to take anything then you are truly blessed.

Horrible alergies until my doctor put me on the nasal spray Nasonex. I can't believe the difference. Have been using it for seveal years with no side effects.
Always had problems with the pills because they made me so drowsy.

Citizen Kane, yes, trial and error can cause problems. I once took some pseudephed and it made me drowsy. So I stopped at a four corner store outside Hollister and bought a Jolt Cola (3x the caffine of coffee) and a Hershey bar. Not good. Very, very not good... I had to take the rest of the day off.

That's what I use with Nasonex. The combo of the three really puts up the "Great Wall of China" against allergies.

I have the absolute worst allergies at times, but this is what seems to work for me most of the time.
Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) OTC - x1
Pseudoephedrine 30mg (x2) - Have to get from the pharmacist's counter at the drug store, and sign for it.
Prone to giving you high heart rate, but heck it works for me.
Nasonex (Prescription) - Nasal Steroids... yay
The ephedrine in the sudafed, counteracts the drowsiness that the benadryl can cause. Coffee or lots of Diet Soda can help with the drowsiness as well, but I don't suggest it, as the ephedrine/caffeine crash is the pits.
