Hi..I got laid off about a month ago and I am about to go on unemployment but at the same time I am doing some market research on starting up a new business..what I was wondering was if the unemployment on my work history for a few months would look bad?..because if so then I will get a night job and still try to get this business going to see if it will fly but my hopes are still high for getting into the department..I just dont want to hurt my chances or anything..thanks in advance!

Now doesn't that sound a bit more responsible?

What if we accepted unemployment compensation in the past (2004)?

I guess it's a little too late to get a night job for that period.
If you are asking what I believe you are asking, and you probably are, wait until you get the opportunity to explain it to your background investigator so they can make a decision based on all of the details and your entire employment history.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to the best of my knowledge, we all pay into unemployment through taxes/social security. When you get laid off, there should be no shame in tapping into a public benefit you paid into. It's not charity. However, I believe you have to be actively searching for employment to receive the benefit. As far as being unemployed for a few months, you might have to explain why, as well as why you lost your job, but in my particular case, it didn't create any problems. I left the Marine Corps on very good terms with a decent amount of savings and didn't have to work for a few months. Easily explained.

Thanks for the replies, hopefully it'll go well with the BI...
Come to think of it, right now I'm more worried about the PAT next week. I don't know how, I don't know why, but I'm having horrible shin splints. Three months of running and suddenly - shin splints.

Federal taxes (also not paid by the employee) only kick in during emergency type situations after you have exhausted the 26 weeks of CA UI. Please note, this is CA info only. I don't know for other states.

:idea:I would go to a Dr. ASAP to see how serious it is. That is definitely something you don't want to mess with.

For what it's worth, I was terminated from a job and collected unemployment while in the process with CHP and still somehow managed to pass backgrounds, barely. Every situation is on a case by case basis, as not all applicants are the same and not all Background Investigators are the same. It will be addressed, if not at your initial interview, it will be at your final interview. Sometimes your character can go a long way for you as well.
