The driver in a high-speed chase that wound through Land Park last week eluded cops but couldn't elude the river.
A fisherman found the body of Shannon Patrick Casey, 36, of Visalia floating in the Sacramento River about 2 a.m. Friday, 15 feet offshore about 200 yards south of Miller Park, according to the Yolo County Coroner's Office.
The California Highway Patrol couldn't be absolutely sure April 2 that Casey was the driver of a white pickup truck that led officers on a chase from Interstate 5, through Land Park and finally down an embankment into the Sacramento River, said a spokesman, Officer Michael Bradley.
However, Casey was their primary suspect based on a description of the driver called in by officers and a report from Merced County about the stolen vehicle involved in the chase, he said.
CHP investigators initially thought Casey had managed to escape from the sinking truck and make it to land, Bradley said. The driver-side window was down, and the interior of the truck was in good condition, he said.
Bradley said the West Sacramento Police Department contacted the CHP as soon as they learned Casey's identity Friday.
For the CHP, it was a mystery solved.
"He got out (of the truck), but not out of the river," Bradley said.
