Hello guys, i am currently only 19 years old but have been wanting to become a police officer since the beginning of high school. I decided to go with CHP when i started college and am currently going for my criminal justice degree. I have a couple of questions on the background investigation when i do apply. Do you only disclose information that you have been charged with. For example, if you had a DUI and were charged with it you of course would mention it but lets say you had drove home drunk from a party but were never caught and safely made it home. Would you mention it to the background investigator. I am only using this as an example i do not drink and have never even tried any drugs. If someone could answer my question i'd appreciate it. It could even be used if you committed a felony but were never arrested and charged for it and no one knew about it, should it be mentioned? Thanks

One thing that is repeated over and over and sometimes over on this site is quite simply:

Disclose everything.

If you currently don't drink, do drugs or commit felonies, my advice is to continue doing what you're doing - then there won't be any dilemma about disclosing such things when the time comes.

We care, for the most part, about the incident rather than the consequences. So yes, you'll have to answer to things you may have done but did not get "caught."

How bad would an sr-22 for too many speeding tickets in one year be then?? I had that happen like three years ago. I hope im not wasting the CHP's time trying to process.

Another option:

If you have any concerns regarding whether you may have an issue in your background which may lead to disqualification, it is highly recommended that you contact the CHP Applicant Investigation Unit for assistance PRIOR TO beginning the selection process. While our investigators cannot divulge the CHP's specific disqualification criteria, through a candid dialogue with you they can provide guidance and assistance in helping you evaluate your personal characteristics as they relate to the CHP's automatic disqualification criteria. The Cadet Hiring Unit can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at (916) 375-2180

And I have used this before and the Officers are very helpful.

HTH.
