Hello there,

First off, I just wanted to say nice forum! And also wanted to say thanks to all police officers here for protecting me. I live in San Francisco and I am a HUGE LEO buff. I also want to become a LEO someday right after when I do four years in the military as a MP. Here in Northern CA, LEOs are getting very good salaries. For example:
San Francisco Police Recruits make approx $64,000 in the police academy and their payscale after the academy is approx $64,000-$89,000 (www.sfgov.org/police) sorry for not pointing out the exact numbers, I'm such a lazy butt right now. The Oakland Police department (Oakland is across from SF about 45 mins) pays you approx $59,000 while in the police academy and $65,000-$80,000 when you're on the job.

Most police departments here offer a starting salary of over $60,000.

Now my question is, why is the CHP's payscale so low? How can a CHP officer working in the SF Bay Area make it out on his/her salary? Is it so expensive to live in Nor Cal, especially the San Francisco Bay Area.

Is there a chance the CHP will give its officers a pay raise soon or in the near future? Or do CHP officers working in the Bay Area get more pay?

I hope this isn't a too personal question. Who is CHP's healthcare provider? Is it Kaiser Permanente by any chance? Do you have to retire at age 60?

Thank you all very much!

The CHP has excellent benefits and there pay does not include overtime.

60 is mandatory retirement, and you get near full pay.

The CHP does not have anywhere near the top scale for pay compared to other departments in California. The benefits and retirement are comparable to other departments in the state.
