I keep seeing news reports on how they still want to try to give illegal immigrants driver licenses.

This really frustrates me, because I know the pros and cons. Insurance purposes, etc...

But why in the hell would you give a drivers license to someone who is here illegally? If you know they are here illegally and you grant them drivers? licenses, that defeats the purpose of ILLLEGAL immigration. It just always drives me crazy when they talk about it. Why not just open up the border and give licenses to everyone.

This is just my 2 cents, feel free to disagree, but I know some about immigration, because I live in a terrible neighborhood.

I'd say it's because many of them are driving anyway,so why not issue them a license.

I agree, a ton of them drive anyways. But what I am saying is that if you know they are here illegally, why wouldn't you deport them? instead you reward them???:biggrin:shock:ubt:

This is a tough topic. On the one hand I agree- if they are here illegally, why give them a license? On the other hand, giving illegals licenses might make it a little more likely that (since they will drive anyway) they might have insurance (maybe?), and it presents an opportunity to screen for convicted criminals. Additionally, if they commit a crime they are already in the system, meaning that they are probably a little easier to identify. Of course that assumes that the "bad" illegal is going to come get a license in the first place. It seems like there'd have to be a lot of assumptions in place to make it worthwhile, but at the same time if it gives the police a lead on someone that has commited some crime just once, it almost proves its worth. I have no idea anyway....it probably will never pass through legislation anyway.

I agree that they should get a licensce if they are going to drive, but they are already illegal, therefore they shouldn't be able to get one, nor be able to drive. A paradox that is a policy makers worst nightmare. So why don't we boot them out? Just look at history. We've used illegals to build our railroads, mine for gold, run our sweatshops, work the plantations, clean our floor, cook our burgers, etc. Its cheap labor and big business, small business will continue to utilize it. Congress will never change it because the lobbiests for big business lobby against it. They'd rather have a work authorization program which changes nothing but the title and makes illegal immigration, "legal". In the 70s one could work at a meat packing plant earning $19 an hour with benefits and they were citizens of this country. Today, the same job is held for 6 months by an illegal being paid $8 an hour with no benefits since they're only there for 6 months. If you're the business owner, which worker would you prefer, or which labor cost would you prefer?

Illegal immigration, this is a hard one. On one hand you can bring up all the tax dollars that are used as a result of undocumented immigrants, but they all play such a big roll in our nations economy. For big and small busness alike there is nothing better than cheap labor. The pros and the cons of this issue almost even out.
