I will be going on my first CHP ride along tomorrow, any body have any advise for me? I have been out with the local PD, SO, and a neighboring PD, all great experiences. Just want to be prepared. Thanks.

There's a lot of good advice if you search.
But ride alongs are really cool. Have fun.

Yah, i have. everything is pretty genaric though, i was interested in the fine details, ie: what to bring (note pad pen/pencil) lunch, lunch money?

A ride along is a time for you to absorb what we do, not document it to the letter. Both lunch and lunch money are a good idea as you will not know the officer's preference until you get there. You could bring a lunch and leave it in the car. Then ask the officer before you leave the office if you should grab it.

no, no, yes. Bring lunch money, and don't assume the officer will be paying for you. You will most likely eat fast food and I'd recommend wearing a nice collared shirt.

Thanks CHPwannaBE, I asked the Sgt. what to wear, and he told me casual business attire. I will bring lunch money! My question was more toward the other items, pen/pencil, paper, video camera, film crew. LOL
looking forward to it immensely!

Thanks DW, thats a great idea, I'll do that. PB&J will be OK in the cooler for a few hours.

My ride along with CHP was the single most amazing experience of my life, it helps when you're about to head back to the station and you begin a high speed pursuit of a suspected drunk driver heading East on the 10 freeway near Cabazon at speeds of about 115mph, and then almost running out of gas on the way back to the station. I'm still not over that day, it was a dream come true.

My last ride along I took was from back east and he got to see a felony stop on a 417 suspect and a DUI fatal scene. At South LA I think you just have to show interest if you want to go.

I went on a couple of ride alongs with the CHP out of the Baldwin Park office...
Two different officers and neither took a lunch break. One of them did eat a protein bar... I didn't mind though, I had a blast throughout the day and time just flew by.
So to anyone going on ride alongs, just like DW said, you never know the officers routine till you're there.
