Who decides which office gets what vehicle and how many different vehicles are there in the CHP?

I'm going to guess that it's done completely at random, and no consideration of operational need is given......ok, a little bitter sarcasm there.

I think it's done based on Division...i.e. each division is allocated so many cars- anyone know the real answer?

As for which type, it depends on where you're working. My area has about half 4x4's and half sedans.

Different vehicles? As in CVPI's with overhead lights, CVPI slick tops, 4x4's, and specially marked vehicles (look for Chargers for this role in the future)? A lot has to do with the needs of the Area, the Commander, and Division Chief. A percentage of each vehicle is decided upon and that is used to replace runout vehicles.

Was that your question?

The "who" part of your question can be tough to narrow down to any one person; technically, Fleet Operations are the responsibility of the Assistant Commissioner, Staff, but there are other people between him and the Area Commands that submit requests for replacement vehicles. The Areas' have fleets of cars that normally get replaced unit for unit when they reach the end of their mileage life span, or wrecked, or severely broken (blown engines, trans, etc). Every process has exceptions to the 'normal' course, but most of the vehicles are deployed where they are needed (4X4's= mountains and deserts, Sedans everywhere else, M/C= Metro Areas, Bikes= Capitol and Truckee, etc... How many different types? Wow....several!! Primary: Sedan (Crown Vic) & M/C's. Special vehicles?....... Trucks, Vans, Trailers, 4x4's, Motorhome Command Posts, SWAT Vehicles, Horse Trailers, Undercover Everything for Task Force Folks to Protective Security Details, Bikes, Golf Carts and even 2 BOATS; yes the CHP has a minature Coast Guard style patrol. I'm sure I probably have missed some; but if it rolls, we can find a use for it.

Hope this helps

Hey dw.....I didn't think the Chargers were testing well yet you think they are in the patrol's future?

Hey dw.....I didn't think the Chargers were testing well yet you think they are in the patrol's future? We already have Chargers out as recruitment vehicles and shortly as vehicles for Management (if they're not already out.) Word is the role of the Camaro is being replaced with Chargers, i.e. one or two per office.

There is a white Charger at Fleet Ops with normal logos and the FS Vision lightbar. I'll try and get a pic of it..

That's pretty much how it is out here. We have four substations and each will be getting 5 new chargers in July. They will be assigned to the most senior officers if they want them. I have heard plenty of whining from officers who ask, why does he get a charger I want one? Well you only have 2 years on and he has 15 that's why. I feel like each officer has it pretty good with having their own assigned car. I do find it amazing that we have plenty of 05 and 06s being auctioned while there are plenty of 00 and 01s still in service with only 50-60 thousand miles. Everyone wants the new car(well most) when the 00-01s run just as good as an 08.

The brass could bring back the Diplomat for those that aren't happy with the CVPI they are given!!!

Hello guys. I may be kind of "off topic", but if I never drove a motorcycle (and have no idea how to do that) should I learn how to drive it before entering to the academy? Thank you.

Hold on, first of don't even worry about that, you don't ride (not drive, sorry a pet peeve) at the academy. That is something you can worry about once you get to your office. Worry more about just driving a car at the academy

No problem and good luck.

Do a search on driving and you will see my opinion in regards to "practicing." Easiest way for me to say it though is play in the dirt

Odd to see a Vision bar on an SMPV and it's not equipped with a FedSig TS100 speaker either. Word is there are 32 B&W Chargers on the way and they will all be slick-tops.

I wouldn't think too many officers woud miss it. I would not mind it not being there. Of course I wouldn't mind a new motorcycle for work either. But we can't expect too much, can we?

Those white Chargers look nice. I've been keeping my eyes out for them, but haven't seen any yet. There does seem to be an increase in the number of SMPVs in the Conejo Valley area, though, where I don't see a lot of CHP cars in general.

What is the purpose for the SMPV?

What makes them "special"? Or are they short bus special?

They are for commercial enforcement I believe. That and they are painted white to make them harder to identify from a normal patrol car.

What makes them "special"? They do not have the traditional paint scheme, optional trunk lettering, optional push bumper.

Speaking of push bumpers....the department I volunteer for doesn't have them on any of the cars due to the amount of complaints and lawsuits brought toward the department for scratching the paint (mostly) when moving cars from out of traffic. How does the CHP deal with this or do you not have this problem?

Also in the picture above the SMPV has those interior slimlighters. My department is doing away with them on the bottom because of how hot the fuses get which, when involved in a rear-end collision has the potential for an even more devastating outcome, gas tank explosion. In all of the pictures I have seen of crown vics on fire caused by a rear impact there have been these types of lights on that bottom location. Any explanation of the CHPs studies on this issue. If I can I will try to post a pic of a white charger my department has.

If my memory serves me correct, the fires in CVPI's were ignited by the gas tank dragging on the ground after they split open. The metal gas tank dragging created sparks, which then ignited the spilled gasoline.

How does the CHP deal with this or do you not have this problem?I haven't got a clue legally.... If the damage is less than $1,000, there is a simple form they can fill out. I've never had anyone complain and never heard of anyone going after us for damage. I'm sure it happens, I just haven't been personally involved.

What gets me are agencies with push bumpers who are not allowed to use them. They'll just sit there blocking an intersection for an hour waiting for a tow. Often they won't even move drivable vehicles...??? I'll push something on its roof to the next ramp and off the freeway if I can. :noidea:

I remember hearing a little while back that Fleet Ops
inadvertently found a way to prevent the fires that have plagued other departments CVPIs in rear end collisions in the way they retrofit the CVPIs for CHP road use.

Ford has a retro-fit program to shield the fuel tank. I don't know how effective it is.

You are right, especially with police forces. The faq is: "is it a genuine police car ?", I reply yes.
