I received a phone call on New Year's Day from the cadet hiring unit informing me that I successfully completed the hiring process and was invited to attend the January class which started on January 7th of this year. Unfortunately, I couldn't accept the invitation due to some personal issues that I wanted to take care of before leaving for the Academy. I haven't received an invitation letter yet for the class starting in April and I was wondering if I should just wait it out or contact my background investigator.
Thanks-

If you don't receive anything in the mail by April 1st you need to call CHU at 916 375-2180.

I would call CHU ASAP. That's how I found out I was accepted. You need to know soon so you can prepare and acquire all the academy essentials. I am on a very tight budget and all the time I get is very uch appreceiated.
I would call CHU ASAP. No, please do not all call CHU ASAP. A handful of people can not field calls from hundreds of applicants who can't wait to get a letter in the mail. You have been advised to wait until April 1, please do so.

I will be staying at the Fairfield Inn & Suites off the West El Camino exit (one exit North of Reed Ave on I-80). I have a bunch of Marriott points from traveling for my current job. I stayed there when I went to Sacramento for the PAT/Psych/QAP and it was decent. They provide breakfast as well.

I don't know anything about the area... but I'm staying at the Harbor Inn (Ramada). It's from the offsite lodging list included in the packet. It was the cheapest and I don't care much for luxury - so I'll crash there the night before.

Hey all, just a quick word of advice regarding the Harbor Inn. Be very cautious when staying there. Personally I would stay elsewhere. Over the years there have been many a car broken into or just flat out stolen while staying there. There are people who know exactly when CHP employees will be staying there, and will cruse the parking lots accordingly. They are also very aware of when each CTC starts and will plan their thefts around those dates as well. It may very well be ‘the cheapest’ motel on the list…but it is only one night, and the extra ten or twenty bucks you spend for more secure lodging will more than pay for itself if you are one that is victimized. There is a residence type hotel on Stillwater that has given us very good rates in the past if you tell them why you are staying there….and heck, it’s so close to the Academy, even if your car gets stolen…you can walk to the front gate without a problem! (kidding!)
You are just starting a life as a target (read - Police Officer)…sad but true, you need to get used to planning around the fact that you are a target for property crimes (theft), and act accordingly. Stay where you will, but I would strongly avoid the Harbor Inn…..just my two cents, spoken from experience!

I am going to make reservations at the Extended Stay America Sacramento, 795 Stillwater Rd. 916-371-1270 State rate of $84. It is .2 of a mile from the academy! They told me that they have never had a problem with theft/vandalism, due to the fact that there is always officers staying there.

This Hotel is less than ten minutes from the Academy, and I have stayed here several times during training with my current job. Co workers have also stayed at the same Hotel many times and we have never had a problem with anything. The rates start at $109.00 a night for two persons.

Just my two cents from very recent experience. The Ramada has not been a problem for us so far (us being myself, and other current cadet families). We have, however, heard some horrible things about the cleanliness, customer service, etc of the Extended Stay. I am not saying you all have to stay at the Ramada, and am not saying absolutely don't stay at the Extended Stay. Just know that pretty much any decently priced place in the area is going to have one issue or another. Those same car thieves also know that CHP people will be staying at the other area hotels at the exact same time. If they are going to steal your car, they are going to do it wherever they find it. Pretty much the only safe place to park it is at the academy!

I've done a search and read some of the posts regarding boots for the Academy... but other than Rocky's or Danners, anyone have suggestions? I can't seem to find a good boot in my area. I kinda wanna try them on before buying, so internet shopping is a last resort.

Thanks in advance...

but other than Rocky's or Danners,
There is a reason that they recommend those two. They fit their criteria.
If I have learned anything from my so being there, it is to follow their guidelines. As petty as some of it may seem, they do everything for a reason. All that is done there has a purpose and will reflect on something you will need to do in your future.
I think sticking with Rocky's or Danners is your best bet for the academy.
Just my opinion.
I have to agree with the above. Thorogood is another boot I see recommended usually. My son ended up with Rocky's. He had 1 pair for dailywear, then when range started, he invested in a second pair, and used the older pair just for range. Try not to stand out.

There are a lot of boots that will fit their criteria. Just make sure they do. I have Rockey 5010's for daily ware and they feel like tennis shoes. They have a very soft upper so it took a while for the toe to shine and that is about all that will accept a shine as the rest of the boot flexes too much and cracks the wax. I have a pair of $40 Magnums from Big 5 for range. You can wait on the range boots. You won't need them till about week 12.
Just get a boot that is comfortable and fits what the little sheet says.

I'm a newbie CHP wife (1/2 way through probation YAY!) & former VERY frequent poster on here . Just wanted to say CONGRATS & that it maybe beneficial to scan through previous academy class threads for round about ideas & concerns you or your support system may want to see. I'm kinda partial to CTC I-07 thread for some reason, but I'm sure you'll guess why. You'll see that everything you are pondering probably has been covered in those previous class post. FYI some finance questions like what to expect to get paid & etc..... is public information & somewhere in the OFFICIAL CHP website it should state it. It's the only thing that really shouldn't be a mystery about what to expect from academy life. The rest really should be a mystery or you are just cheating yourself or being cheated of the academy right of passage experience. Ladies & Gents who are about to board the Rollercoaster of Academy life remember, that the California highways are full of those who paid their dues just like you are about to start doing. They did it & so can you. 27 weeks really isn't that bad for a chance at a career that will offer you various opportunities once you get that badge. Surround your self w/ a support system that understands the temporary situation you are in & will not let you QUIT. Alright the pom poms are put down.

I recently received a pair of Thorogoods that I purchased at www.onlinebootstore.com. I had a hard time finding appropriate boots that fit me in the San Diego area so I had to resort to the internet. I would only purchase boots online if you're 100% sure about your size in that brand. At least go into a store and get familiar with the sizing of each brand if you can. With CTC-II-08 starting very soon, make sure the Web site can get you the boots in time and will allow you to return them if they don't fit. Good luck!!!

I bought the Rocky 5066 boots for the Academy and they are very comfortable. The Rockies you mentioned may have been uncomfortable because they were not worn in yet. For some info on the Danners, check out DW's link to the Acadia Elite, which he wore during the academy.

Question. I'm not sure if I should use the cleaning service the Academy provides for my uniforms, or if I should use an outside dry cleaner. Just use the Academy service, you will have more than one uniform, so you should always have a clean one ready to go. Also you will learn you can get multiple days out of one uniform. Have fun.

I have to disagree here. You will have locals in your class that can show you where the nearest and best cleaners are. Or just ask your seniors. They have a good hand on that by now.
Prudential does not press your uniforms so, if you go that route-in addition to waiting about two weeks for one order-you will still have to press them out. You would be better off just sending your uniforms through the machines in the day room for $.75 a load and doing the ironing your self.
You will be given at least four short sleeve shirts. That sounds like a lot until you consider the time of year you are going and the fact that you will be wearing Kevlar in the near future. Read: HOT!!
This is one aspect of your training that you should not be worried about. Get it done at a dry cleaner near by.

There is a good dry clean service that will also press for you nearby the academy. It is located at the corner of Truxel and El Camino in the Long's shopping center (NE Corner). If you drive one exit past Reed Ave., which is the academy exit and get off on W. El Camino, head east (right turn). Follow El Camino down for a short while and its on the left hand side at Truxel. Expect 3-4 business days before return, I drop off on Friday's and pickup Wednesday after 1700. Each shirt is 2.75 each and pants are a bit more, just make sure you ask for a specific press or pleat with no double lines.

Your right what would I know. Except your down to your last uniform, then you get restricted Wed. night and can't get to the dry cleaners. There is an outside cleaner that picks up from the Academy then drops off again. No one in my class ever had a problem but I know nothing. :tape::hitwall: I don't know about the whole waiting for two weeks? I never had o wait for two weeks for a uniform to get pressed. You are right in one aspect, you should not worry about the dry cleaning and by going with the sevice at the academy you won't have to.

All very valid points that I will take into consideration. Thanks for all the feeback. I'm sure once I get up there the unknown won't be so...well unknown. It will all work itself out and I'll find out which way works best for me. Thanks again all!

I don't know for sure, but the impression I've gotten from several people is that the dry cleaning service that worked well for us is no longer there. Watercadet mentioned Prudential doing the cleaning and that they do not press the uniform.

I fear change. OK then Im down with what Ph3nom and Yze said. Cant wait to see what cadet brings a full size ironing board strapped to their suitcase.
Aren't there still ironing boards and irons in the laundry rooms? I recall becoming very familiar with them (along with innumerable cans of "sizing" starch).

They were still there two years ago. All....six of them I think. Six for 200 or so cadets.
Bring your own travel iron with a traveling ironing board.

We took care of this ourselves for the whole 27 weeks - which we just finished. My husband bought a small travel iron to take in the first time he was allowed to get things from his car. He also had spray starch. If he was there for a weekend, he'd wash the uniforms in the day room and press them himself. The weekends he came home, we'd wash them Friday night as soon as he walked in the door, then drop them at a same day cleaners early Saturday morning. They would do the pressing for us and we'd pick them up in the afternoon. It was a pretty simple process for us.
I wish we'd had the reliable on-site service Eagl5 had when he went through, but as the others said, "Things change." I think that what ever system you come up with will work fine for you. There will be locals to help you with a dry cleaner if needed, but you can still save some money by at least washing them yourself. Anyway, not saying you or anyone else has to do it this way. I am just detailing what worked for us. Good luck.

They stil have the ironing boards in the laundry rooms but it gets pretty busy for the first several weeks. My roommate brought a iron and ironing board so we just ironed our uniforms in our rooms and tried to stay out of sight as much as possible.

Just wanted to wish all the guys and gals today Good Luck! Remember not to give up and keep going!
I just wanted to say good luck to all the guys and gals who reported this AM. To all the spouses and families of the cadets, keep their spirits up. Do not let them quit and do not be the cause of them quitting. They need to be 100% focused on the academy. If the washer overflows, the sink backs up, or the toilet clogs, fix it and do not bother him with it. YOU can do this also. And when he calls, keep it short, there is so much for him to be doing. This is not a 9-5. When he calls, he will probably be shining brass/boots, filing out paperwork, ironing, etc... This week will be long. BUT SO WORTH IT.
To the PTB, anyone know a head count for this class?

From what I heard...as of Friday 211 had confirmed. Hopefully everyone reported.

I heard 214 on Sunday at the Academy. I left my hubby at the Academy and I am so very excited for him and the rest of the "family". All the shiny bald heads! We had a really great dinner and bonded with the new family, when I looked around I saw quality men and women...I am so very proud. I laugh when I think of him being yelled at and under stress...he is probably thinking "oh boy!"
Anyways, thanks for letting me post my 2 cents...I can't wait for the stories.

 hmm... That's awful...I feel so badly for them and their families. Seems like each class loses more and more cadets. Hasn't CTC I-08 lost 46 already? Its such a long process just to get there, to leave on the first day would be greatly disappointing.

Sounds to me like it is.

Then it IS hearsay. I was told this by a BGI; therefore making it credible hearsay...if there is such a thing.

I didn't mean anything bad by it at all. The last thing I want to do on here is stir up any kind of drama, especially with one who has a "Verified Chippee" attached to his name.
I hope things went better today for all the new cadets!!!

Before I ask my question, I just wanted to say that I've used search and I have read the academy requirements for boots as well.
I am wondering if there is any problem with wearing Danner 10" Fort Lewis boots during the academy?
I have read some posts by Verified Chippies, and most seem to like Danner boots. However I have also read 1 or 2 posts not recomending them for wear at the academy. I have also read that some have worn Danners during the academy. So I'm a little confused. The boots seem to meet academy boot standards.... but then again I know things are not always what they seem. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My 2 cents: stick with the Thorogoods and make life easy on yourself. They are easier to spit shine and they look great. Danners are comfy, but not when you have to keep them in peak form every day like the Academy.
You will be plenty busy up there and won't have time for extra tasks or gigs, for that matter. Go with the sure thing... IMHO.

Hang in there. It is worth all the sweat, blood and tears that you will go through while at the academy. The real stress starts during the FTO training. Just take it day by day and you will be fine.
Blogs are up! They did 4 weeks at once.
