That's pretty crazy. I just did a little search on "worst traffic accidents" and it says that the worst in US history was in CA on I-5 near/in Coalinga. The article states that a dust storm blew through and caused a 164 cars to collide, killing 17 and injuring 150 people!

How did the CHP and other agencies go about conducting the investigation? Would the officer assigned to that beat just be drown in paperwork or would there be a team assigned to it? Just curious...

You know...

It all starts with the 22350. A driver in the #1 lane gets in the white out conditions. He slows down because he cant see. Here comes dumbSh!T in the #1 barreling down at speed and doesnt slow down. POW!!!!

22350VC. The bread and butter of the Highway Patrol.

Remember. Safety and Service.(for the old timers)

What should you do if your driving and all of a sudden the fog appears and your not sure what to do is it better to slam on your brakes or accelerate through it?

BH, Speaking from the standpoint of being in the above dustcload and listening to the 164 cars colliding, yes it was my beat, the Department will provide a huge pool of resources to help prepare the report. We broke down the multitude of T/Cs into smaller scenes and divided them between several officers. MAIT and MAIT associates provided guidance and assistance from the outset.

It was a huge event, one that I'd just as soon avoid in the future, but one that gave me a tremendous perspective about how to deal with a large scene and its aftermath.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't turning your high beams on in fog make it even more difficult to see?
