Actually this is a VERY timely post... because I'm looking into getting braces (at the age of 31 might I add). No doubt I will also need my wisdom teeth pulled because my teeth are crowded.

Did you dental insurance cover it? I've heard of people going to Mexico or third-world countries (even Thailand) to get their teeth pulled. My father often travels to Tijuana to have his teeth done.

The insurance covered $1,000 of it and I paid $800.

Whoa....before you head to Mexico to get them pulled, check out some universities and dental school, etc.... sometimes they will do stuff for free or at least discounted. That might just be for cleanings, but I'm pretty sure UOP's dental school in SF has some kind of program like that.

I got lucky and only had to have two of my wisdom teeth pulled....not fun at all. I had work a day or two after. Lifting surfboards and other crap at the marina I worked at in high school.....that sucked big time. Good luck on a quick recovery....keep those holes clean!

I had all four of mine pulled when I was in high school - it was absolutely miserable. I couldn't eat solid food for five days, and was in constant agony. They gave me Percodan to take, but I quit taking it after the first day because it made me feel like a zombie.

I was one of the stranger cases.

I had one top pulled.

Then two months later, the bottom pulled.

Then 4 (or so) months later, the other side top and bottom at the same time. This was a day before Thanksgiving. Never had an issue, and never had an issue while eating. Lot eaiser to eat while you have one side of your mouth free.

I guess have the oral surgeon as a family friend helped ;)

Man,I hate this memory.I remember being in boot camp 5 years ago and everyone having to go to the dentist to be a guinea pig.I had my lower wisdom teeth coming through and the new rookie dental officers all get to practice on us right after dental school before they go out to the fleet.I still cringe when I think of all the tugging they had to do on one side of my mouth that took about 45 minutes while the other side came out in about 2 minutes. The worst part were the worthless motrin pills they give you for the pain... Luckily, I just got my uppers pulled 6 months ago before I get out of the Navy and this Captain was a pro and at least they now prescribe you some perkuset for the pain which is a lot better. I recommend everyone doing this while they are still young cause I couldn't imagine doing this to my mouth if I was older...

I guess it all depends on age, general health, fear factor, and how badly impacted they are. I had all 4 removed at the same time, when I was 19, and they had to literally cut through the gum, and break the teeth with pliers and pick out the pieces. No pain meds given. And I went to work that day with a slightly sore mouth and cracked lips. No big deal.

A year ago, at the ripe age of 38, I got an upper molar extracted, and I was the most miserable SOB for three days. Couldn't tell you why this one hurt so bad and the others didn't. I guess it depends on the dentist, and what you expect to happen....

Ray,

My story is similar...in 1984 I was in Nuclear Power School in Orlando Fl. We had classes M-F 9-5 and I had a dental appointment on Monday. I was prepping for submarine service and at that time all sumbariners were to have there wisdom teeth removed. I went to the dentist who sent me next door to the orthodontist. They removed all 4 (impacted) gave me a motrin and sent me BACK to class....drooling like a baby. Man...that stunk!!

I got mine removed last summer. I looked like a damn chip munk for 4-5 days. ( since I had both the top and botom removed ). I didnt feel too much pain though. The doctor said hes never seen anyone use so much nitrious oxide. I emptied a full bottle and a half before surgery. ( Might have to do with the REALLY deep breaths I was taking ). But then after I woke up I had a perscription for Vicadin ( or however you spell it ) and was pretty much pain free for the rest of that week.

My wife told me a story about an encounter she had with the CHP after having two wisdom teeth removed.....Years before we met (mid 80's) she was driving on the 405 frwy in the city of Carson. She had the two teeth removed the day before and she started to experience some bleeding while on the freeway which she was trying to control while driving but couldn't so the nearest place to pull over was a weigh station. As she was sitting in her car an Officer approached her and asked why she pulled into the station. She told the Officer about her situation but he cited her for pulling into the weigh station.

Now I've heard that it's much better to have an oral surgeon remove the teeth versus a dentist. Any truth with this?

I think the Orthodontist is the only one who does it.

Orthodontist does braces and stuff like that. An Oral Surgeon does the wisdom tooth thing...

I had two done by my dentist in college -- Novocaine only.

Had the other two done last year by a maxillofacial surgeon and was knocked out. Must say being out was more pleasant.

For both, I was prescribed Vicodin, but really didn't need it. Yeah, it hurt, but it was far more unpleasant having them done while awake.

They knocked me out, I didn't want local anesthesia.

So far I am in day 3, and this seems to be the worst day so far.
