View Full Version : Silliest Vehicle Code Section
K-Lo,
Thats called a redi-ref, ready reference. It is a list of the most widely used sections and fits nicely in a pinch book. I believe we are due new ones soon and, if so, I'll send you my old one. I'll let you know.

I'm going with 22410VC - Speed on metal tire not to exceed 6 mph. What the heck?

It must be referring to farm equipment and military vehicles.

Granted, all of these have their purposes, and all of them make sense, to some extent. They sure look humorous at first glance, though.
Ok, there's 280 (link below) which defines "darkness" for people who are too stupid to know when to turn on their lights...
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d01/vc280.htm
There is also 23120, which outlines how wide sunglasses can be. (link below)
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc23120.htm
Or how about 2470, which restricts the transport of "inedible kitchen grease." haha! (link below)
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d02/vc2470.htm
There is also 21959, which makes it illegal to ski or toboggan across any roadway if your actions impede the passage of vehicles... man, who DOES this stuff??
http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21959.htm
Enjoy!

I see 21959 all the time on my way home.....people are nuts.....a friggin highway/road is no place to have your kids play in the snow. I wonder what the codes are for the same people that use my driveway as a toilet/garbage can.....
I've done farm labor enforcement, it was the "in" thing about 7 years ago. Never saw it on farm equipment but that makes sense to me. Just think its a funny section, I know there is a purpose - somewhere.

...it's to avoid speeding problems with those pesky steam rollers....guys get on them and think they're in some kind o' hot rod!

Another good one is the high beam indicator light, lord forbid it burns out and a correction ticket needs to be issued!
Here's an odd, seldom-used one: Section 21717 says that if there is you're required to cross a bicycle lane to make a turning movement, you SHALL drive in the bicycle lane prior to making the turn.

My friend fail a driving test because he fail to merge in the bike lane to make a right turn.
Speaking of the VC, I was just reading it tonight. Pretty interesting stuff actually. It is a pretty thick book.
I know that Academy lessons are not for public disclosure but is there a list of VC sections that a future Academy hopeful can start to study? I was thinking that flash cards might be a good idea. Are there any sections that are emphasized over another?
I noticed on one of the RAs I was on, the officer had a skinny VC booklet in his ticket book. Are those booklets available to the general public?

Read and learn the code sections that deal with definitions. It is at the beginning. Defines vehicle, highway, roadway etc.
Also familiarize yourself with divisions 10 and 11 where most of the sections you will work with are found.
There is much more but that will help.

Our local Junior College has a Police Academy and the Redi-Ref is available at the college bookstore.

Also, if you want to be able reference the VC and you don't always have an internet connection, the DMV has a .pdf version as well. It is the electronic version which state printing uses to print our VCs each year....and best of all it's free! Click HERE (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/vcpdftoc.htm)
You can just save them to your laptop, pda etc. and access it anytime. It is even searchable through Adobe Reader (http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html).

Oh..I forgot to add this to the list of silly sections. Maybe someone can try to explain this:
21452. (a) A driver facing a steady circular yellow or
yellow arrow signal is, by that signal, warned that the related
green movement is ending or that a red indication will be
shown immediately thereafter.
Does that sound citable to you?
Apparently it is. Here is the description from the list of violations in the back of the Vehicle Code:
I 21452(a) Failure of vehicle to properly respond to signal of yellow light or arrow.
And don't say it is a violation if you speed up when a light turns yellow because if you aren't going over the speed limit then how could it be a violation...and if you do speed up over the speed limit then you violate 22350. If it turns red before you cross the limit line then it's a violation of 21453(a). How exactly is a driver supposed to respond then?
It just started being punitive in the last couple of years.
Just a thought!

Looks like this topic is dying off. Oh well, my 2 cents. 22104 VC relating to U-turns in front of Fire stations. I know a lot of local officers here who use this one for PC all the time (just sitting on the fire station) and I can't figure out why it's even there? Oh well.

Once upon a time....Someone thought that if a car made a U-turn in front of a fire station, and their car happened to quit running at the very instant they were blocking the fire station driveway, the fire engines would be blocked in. With that thought in mind, some politician wrote a law and got it passed.
I remember using the law to stop jerks who were screwing around in front of the fire station that was next door to a bar here. The patrons of the bar were racing around, screaming and yelling, and just generally being a**w***** while the firefighters were trying to sleep. Almost everyone would use the station driveway to make a u-turn, and there I was...Sign here please...

they also have pamphlet VC's. I have seen them at most uniform stores and in the galls catalog. the redi-ref is a bit bigger than those because it has more than just the VC in it.
