If there is anyone out there who made it to Academy training, but decided to leave early or got dropped... care to share your story?

Use the search and you'll find a few. I would recommend you focus on the many here who were successful.

Yes. After my entire life revolving around getting in for 2 years, when I was finally accepted, my family...flipped out, to put it mildly. Suddenly the idea of their baby being a cop was looking real. I arrived on pickup day with zero confidence stemming form lack of support. If I didn't have the friends I'd made on this website, I might not have shown up. Weekends should be a time of relaxation, not of 'you should quit' from those who are supposed to care about what you want. Certainly couldn't call home at night for a pat on the back! The only one at home who was 100% behind me was my then boyfriend/now husband. He was even OK with it last year when I though of re-applying.

I was also WAY too hard on myself. During the application process I felt I had to be PERFECT in everything I did to be considered. Well, there's no being perfect at the academy even if you do everything right, so I was beating myself up over the most ridiculous things. I was really headed for self destruction, and I've learned to relax quite a bit since then. During my exit interview, I was told that the staff had observed that I was WAY too hard on myself!!

Unfortunatly, I listened when various instructors would tell us that the job isn't worth your family. I've since learned that if you're family isn't behind you in one thing, they aren't behind you in a lot of things and will screw you over & be highly controlling at every opportunity (a situation that really came to a head last year, causing problems that may never heal). I lasted 9 days, although I'd decided to leave much sooner...I was just TOO BUSY to go to the staff office to resign? Finally one day during drill I thought 'why am I here? I've already decided to leave?' and I walked during drill.

Big mistake. I still want it very much, but it will never be.

Pup,I remember you posting right after you left but can't recall your class. Was it CTC-II-07?

Pupdog, I remember you too and I think I am one of those friends you met here who supported you. I said then and I say now, you are not through with this yet. There is a place for you in the LE field. You will get there. Who knows what it may be? It may not be as a uniformed CHP officer but there is a place for you.

Nope, CTC III-06.

Family in the sense that we are the sort who understand the importance of dogs in our lives!

Thanks retchp. I still lurk around here quite a bit, and get plenty of PMs from applicants (don't worry, I'm not giving up any fun academy secrets!). There's definitly no badge in my future...34 & finally getting around to having a baby (little problem, as anyone from CTC III-06 can tell you...I DON'T DO NEEDLES!!!!!). I'd love to dispatch, but I'm awfully comfy in this winery gig!

There are thousands that have done what you are thinking. They all have a story.
I ran into one the other day, 11-82 only. He said there isn't a day that goes by that he doesn't think about it and regret his decision. Every time he sees an officer at dinner, on a stop or driving, he wishes he could take it back. It really comes down to this, if you really want to be an officer there is nothing that will stop you. If you realy don't want to, there will be a zillion reasons to walk away from the academy. Your mind and the staff officers will give them to you by the boat load.

That's it... We had a number of cadets in my class that were beat by the staff... PT... ET.. ect. However they had the heart and the guts to push themselves to levels well beyond what they could ever dream of. They are now officers because they wanted it bad enough

Thats it. Well said.

Many people go through the academy more then once (I graduated twice). I quit during "break-in" and went back through about 3 years later. I really did not want to do the academy again but I even more so, I did not want to live with the "I should have never quit" in the back of my head forever. :hitwall:

I washed out on skid pan in week 10. Sliding a car around was foreign to me. I'm working in an area office and am taking some EVOC classes through a local SO's academy, so I can get back for CTC II-08. It took me a while to understand what the instructors were teaching me. On the last try I was confident going in, but as the session went on I started stressing out more. I wasn't consistent enough to pass. It was a humbling experience getting walked up, but I had done well enough in other areas that they said they would take me back. Working in a local office is great for experience and learning, but hard because it's what I want and it's going to take me longer to get there.

Keep your eye on the goal and you will get there. Better you washed out at the academy than on the highway. You will learn what you need and return. I wish you the best.

Those who drop/fail do not have the heart to be a part of the CHP or an officer in general. If a little pain and discomfort make them so be it, its better in the long run.

How far and to what extent will the CHP work with you in regards to failing certain subjects? I have heard you can rehab an injury at a local office, but I had not heard you could fail a portion of the tests and be welcomed back?

going through the academy once is tough enough, my POST recently expired so I now have to go through another 8 months of hell. i think at one point we all want to DOR but our strong desire to work in LE doesnt let us.

I believe it really depends on you. If you show promise, and are having issues in one area, such as EVOC, it can happen. They will discuss the issues and the options when the time comes. It is much easier not to let the time come though......
