So, I know I might be hijacking this from the Chippies Only section (I saw it on the last post that shows up on the main page), but does it really bother you guys when people refer to you as troopers vs. officers? Is there a real big difference, or is that just something other states call thier highway patrolmen to make them feel tougher ;) ?

I think it bothers some officers because they don't want to be confused with these guys:

Some states you go to...State Troopers are actually feared. Most of it is their reputation, not reality. But when your called a trooper, and your station is referred to as Barracks....you gotta admit...thats cool. In some states, troopers act in a capacity as a Deputy Sheriff would here in Ca. Where the term "trooper" came from...I dont know. Im sure it came from the military. There are several State Police agencies where you salute Lt's and higher, and they have ranks like "First Sgt." "Sgt. Major" etc. North Carolina and Virginia would be examples.

Doesn't bother me a bit - I've always liked "Trooper", myself....it wouldn't have hurt my feelings one bit if our Department had adopted it.

If you wanna see somebody who gets tweaked about a title, call an SO Deputy "Officer" some time! Deputies like being called Deputy (and I can respect that...I've always thought it was a cool title)

Mentor...

Better than calling you "Guard" .....referring to the Corrections Deputies.

Well I have been called, "Boss," by numerous parolees.

Boss is a prison term. If someone calls you boss on the street, it should be a clue. Having worked Corrections myself, some seasoned inmates will tell you it is backwards for "Sorry Son Of a Bitch"

Exactly. Just as they refer to the COs as "HACK" (Horse's Ass Carrying Keys).
