Bay area guy, just some friendly advice and you can take it how you want but if you want a CHP officer to contact you, start dropping the slang. It's not professional and you dont want to start off on the wrong foot. In no way am I trying to be rude or anything like that. With that said I wish you the best of luck. To any officer or admin, I hope I did not over step my boundary.

Yes 20 is young, but age is not the only factor that will be evaluated. There is no getting around the fact that you have to be 21 by the time that you graduate the academy. When candidates go through the hiring process many things are taken into consideration (maturity being a huge one). There is allot to be said for life experience. Before you begin the hiring process take a good look at yourself and be honest with yourself about how ready you are. Once you have done that, stop by the local CHP office and talk with the public affairs officer and go onto the CHP website and research what we do. This is just my two cents and I am sure that others will have their say as well. Good luck and god speed.

(I agree that you should drop the slang).

elkillaincasa510@Msn.comEnrique,

Age is not the issue, maturity is. And professionalism. And attention to detail. There are hundreds, if not thousands of pointers here if you care to look through the archives.

If you are serious about joining the Highway Patrol, go by the Hayward Office (next to Target off Whipple) and pick up an application packet. Read the materials inside and out. You can ask about a ride along; it may or may not be granted depending on the circumstances. Feel free to ask the Front Desk Officer any questions you have (if they are not too busy), but also keep in mind that this will be your second impression to people you may be interviewing with in a few months. (Your post here would be the first impression.)

Good luck in the process and there are many of us here who are willing to answer any questions that you may have.

Just to clarify, the new rules are 21 to enter the academy. (Per Snowdog.) (http://www.chpforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=32595#post32595)

Become a California Highway Patrol Officer: Minimum Qualifications

Age:

20-35 years of age (as of written test date).

Vision:
The candidate must read from a standard Eye Test chart.
If eyeglasses or hard contact lenses are worn, uncorrected vision must be no less than 20/40 in each eye and corrected to 20/20 in each eye. Applicants who have successfully worn soft contact lenses for the past 12 months are not required to meet an uncorrected standard, as long as their corrected vision is 20/20 in each eye. Normal color vision is required as assessed by the Farnsworth-Munsell D-15 test. An X-Chrom Lens is prohibited.

Health:
Good health. Must be free from any physical, mental or emotional condition that would prohibit the full performance of all the essential duties and functions of a CHP officer.
http://www.chp.ca.gov/images/spacer.gif
Education:
High school diploma, GED, or California High School Proficiency Examination.
Highly desirable: possession of a degree, Associate of Arts or higher, from an accredited college; also, additional course work or advanced skills in the following areas: English, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary and composition; reading and comprehension; mathematics (used for traffic accident calculations); typing and computer skills (many officers use computers for reports, and most patrol vehicles currently have or will have computers); bilingual; physical fitness; other helpful courses may be social sciences such as sociology and psychology.

Conduct:
No felony convictions and good personal conduct; must possess a California driver license upon appointment to the Academy. The CHP has strict guidelines relating to the personal characteristics required for employment as a law enforcement officer. During the QAP Oral Interview, and later during the Background Investigation, a candidate is evaluated relative to an established set of automatic disqualification criteria. Candidates are asked questions relating to the RECENCY AND FREQUENCY of traffic citations, at-fault automobile collisions, illegal drug usage, arrests and convictions.
If you have any concerns regarding whether you may have an issue in your background which may lead to disqualification, it is highly recommended that you contact the CHP Applicant Investigation Unit for assistance PRIOR TO beginning the selection process. While our investigators cannot divulge the CHP's specific disqualification criteria, through a candid dialogue with you they can provide guidance and assistance in helping you evaluate your personal characteristics as they relate to the CHP's automatic disqualification criteria. The Cadet Hiring Unit can be reached Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. (Pacific Standard Time) at (916) 375-2180.

Citizenship:
United States Citizen or permanent resident immigrant who is eligible and has applied for citizenship; must be a United States citizen at time of appointment.

I'm not sure I understand. Well then what? You can start the process when you're 20, but may not be appointed to the Academy until 21...

We had a 20 year old in my class and I didn't graduate that long ago, she didn't graduate but she was there none the less. Did things change recently?

From Snowdogs post in June: "I needed some clarification on the age requirement because I've seen it coming up more often than normal recently. What I learned was that YOU MUST NOW BE 21 TO ENTER THE ACADEMY. This change took place about 6 months ago and has nothing to do with firearms. It's really not worth going into the details here and now but this will be the standard from here on in. So those of you who are not yet 21 and have been wondering what the delay is, there is your answer. Now your 21st birthday will be even more special."

What if you are 20 when you pick up the packet, test at 20 1/2 years old, get to backgrounds at 20 3/4 months old then get to the Academy at 20 years and 363 days old?

Well ill be turning 21 in May. I actually just sent out the application so hopefully all goes well. I have thought about this on and on if this is what I really want and i believe this is me. I love meeting new people, helping out the community as much as possible, love the different things that might happen while on a shift. All of it, i have put into consideration and this is me. I have one question thats been in my mind for a while. Is being able to speak Spanish a plus for new applicants?

THAT, my friend is where the pythagorean theorem portion of the hiring process comes into play……fire all the background investigators, and replace them with MAIT members!

I guess you could always use the Quadratic equation to figure it out....but you always get a yes AND no answer that way...

Sorry....I'll go put the propeller hat away now...

Yeah in Spanish class and in the field because you get bilingual pay if you pass the certification test. Bueno

Age is just a number. You can be 30 years old and have the maturity of a 12 year old.

It seems there are lots of people that want a job who are giving advice to other people who have yet to get a job. Don't really get that one but whatever. Somehow I made it. It must have been a fluke.

Let me try and clear something up here. This is what the law states! For those of you who don't know about CHP language, SHALL = Must.

2256. Notwithstanding Section 18932 of the Government Code, the
minimum age limit for appointment to the position of entry level
peace officer of the Department of the California Highway Patrol,
shall be 21 years, and the maximum age limit for examination shall be
35 years.

By the way, in your picture thats not a 5 point harness setup in your car is it? Tour not into anythig illegal like streetracign, because that might be frowned upon? Just a thought.

Bay Area Guy,

Seems like there is a lot of growing up that needs to be done by you prior to you attempting to get hired by us. For starters start spelling like normal people do and cut out all the coo and wen, etc.....Also don't go to parking lots and practice when you get the time. Some parking lots are covered by the CVC and if you crash or hurt someone you would be going to jail, getting ticketed etc.. Just some food for thought.

In my opinion, you need some time to mature and grow up........:hitwall:
