What constitutes running a red light? Is it entering an intersection while the light is red or being in an intersection when the light turns red (entering it with a yellow light)?

21453. (a) A driver facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown, except as provided in subdivision (b)

Fridgepants,

If your front license plate has not broken the prolongation line (as defined above) prior to the light turning red, then you have violated the section above. However, if any portion of your car is in the intersection prior to the light turning red (even the front plate), then the intersection and right of way are yours.

Good luck in court.

Nah, no court stuff. I was just wondering because I browsed the CVC and couldn't find a clear answer.

Whew! And here I thought you were in the same situtation I've been in, until I really leaned the vehicle code.

Well, now you know!

Know the code, it can be your friend.
