(12-21) 07:56 PST OAKLAND -- (12-21) 11:39 PST OAKLAND - A man was shot to death by Oakland police early today after officers saw him appear to reach for a gun, authorities said.

The shooting in the Eastmont neighborhood of East Oakland occurred just after midnight at the corner of Ritchie Street and Bancroft Avenue, police said.

Two officers responded to the area after police received calls from neighbors about a suspicious vehicle, Police Department spokesman Officer Roland Holmgren said. When they arrived, they found a car in the middle of the intersection with three or four men inside, he said.

As the officers approached the car, they saw somebody who appeared to be reaching for a gun, Holmgren said. Both officers fired at the car, striking the man.

Holmgren would not say whether the officers had seen a firearm before shooting, but said police had later found a gun in the vehicle.

The car sped off and stopped about half a mile away at Ritchie and Ney Avenue, where the suspects fled into yards, he said. Police set up a perimeter and found two of the suspects, including the man who was shot. He was taken to the hospital and died at 1:30 a.m., police said.

"It shows you somebody's resolve," Holmgren said of the dead man. "Even though he was fatally injured, he was still trying to get away."

The other man was arrested, but police gave no information on the charges. Officers are still hunting for the other suspect or suspects.

The two officers involved in the shooting were put on administrative leave pending investigation, a routine measure. The name of the man who was shot has not yet been released.
