WEED - A California Highway Patrol officer was injured this morning when his CHP truck was hit by a pickup while he was at the scene of an earlier traffic accident.
Officer A.J. Wimer, 46, was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Mount Shasta suffering from moderate injuries, the CHP said.
According to the CHP, Wimer was in his parked vehicle in the center divider of Interstate 5 north of the South Weed interchange when a northbound pickup driven by Victor V. De La Cruz, 36, of Pasco, Wash., slid across the freeway around 6:07 a.m., and struck the rear of his vehicle.
Wimer and other officers were at the scene of an earlier solo vehicle rollover and the road conditions were icy from a winter storm.
Wimer's truck had its rear emergency lights activated to try to slow down traffic, but witnesses estimated De La Cruz was driving around 60 mph when his vehicle approached the accident scene, the CHP said.
De La Cruz declined medical treatment for his minor injuries and his 14-year-old passenger, Jonathan De La Cruz, was not hurt.
Both vehicles sustained major damage.
The accident scene was cleared around 8 a.m., but traffic was not affected by the crash, the CHP said.
