Has anything like what happened to this Sac Co deputy ever happened to any of you or anyone you know of? Makes you think...

What a nightmare. I am surprised that the suspect kept coming in the attack mode after the vic identified himself and brandished his weapon. Makes you wonder if the guy was a nut case, doped up or blind vengence...........scary stuff
I have some questions in my mind about confronting a suspect like this off duty. Seems like it the physical confrontation was elective but maybe there is more to the story.

True, there is usually more to every story. I wonder if the suspect figured he had gone "this far" with the victim, backing down to an officer would be an unacceptable blow to his ego. Perhaps he was of the mindset that an off duty officer has no jurisdiction. Sort of like the common misconception that CHP doesn't have jurisdiction unless they are on a highway. I overheard that one in a conversation while someone was explaining why they shouldn't have been cited. Funny how some people try to find a way out of getting cited.

Desperate people do crazy things.

It must of took a lot of self restraint not to blow that suspect away. They're both lucky to be alive.

Here's a fairly similar story:

Officer Fidel Aleman

Central L.A.
July 23, 1992

Officer Fidel Aleman was driving to the Central Los Angeles Office to report for his shift that began at 9:30 p.m. when a pickup made an unsafe lane change directly in front of him. Aleman flashed his lights at the driver and the pickup slowed, then the driver began to follow the patrolman with his high beams glaring. When the pickup continued to follow the officer after he exited the freeway, Aleman decided to confront the driver. As Aleman stepped out of his car, the suspect driver slowly drove along the left side of the officer, then raised a gun and fired one shot through the truck's passenger window. Aleman was shot in the chest, fell back in the driver's seat and fired one round at the suspect as he was speeding away. Officer Aleman, 33, and a member of the CHP for eight years, died 20 minutes later.

A few times over the years, I've had wierdos on my tail that seemed to be following me, and I've just driven toward the nearest police station. Luckily nothing has ever come of these, they've always given up before arriving. I've never had to walk in & report something. That's my applicant (civilian) answer, and reading it, I thought my 'when I'm an officer' answer would be to do pretty mych what he did. But reading Chippysgt's post changed my mind. I would still drive to the nearest station before getting out of the car!

I actually got in a fight at church off duty...I guy came in saying he was the devil...you know the story.....he left, after church he was chasing old ladies around the parking lot growling at them. I "intercepted" him and was able to get him cuffed. His front teeth left a very nice white chalky mark on the blacktop. He knew I was a cop from prior on duty contacts. Small world.

Honestly, if someone were to approach me on or off duty in that manner, I would have drawn down on him. As soon as I came to the conclusion he had no weapon in his hands, I would hope to have some OC spray within my reach ( if he continued to fight ). If not, holster my weapon and take him down the old fashion way. But its very unusual to get non-compliance when you have your gun drawn.
