This was a sad story, just as they all are, and now his last efforts may be a waste. Is this a common occurance when an officer dies and is unable to testify? Can his notes, if any were taken, be used in court or would that not help? I realize notes may not tell the whole story.

In many cases, the case will be dismissed. Others, detectives may be able to recreate and re interview victim, wits, etc.
