Hello,

I have been watching this forum for a while and it is very interesting! It is interesting to read about other CHP areas. Where I live and work, we have both of the last 1 man residence posts in the state. They are out of the Grass Valley (42) and Truckee (80) offices. Anyhow I know you all work in diffrent climates and were currently in cold weather (around the same as Truckee) with lots of ice. I am looking for a great pair of boots any suggestions? Thanks so much!

There is a boot thread somewhere here. Do a search. I remember Danners and Chippewas mentioned.

Find one of those yuppie granola type outfitting shops (sorry, couldn't think of how else to describe them) and look for a pair of Salomon (as in ski boots) winter hiking boots. I have a pair and they are great in the snow and ice. Your feet won't get cold and the traction isn't too bad either.

The only down side is the top of the boot does not go up high enough to keep snow out if you are walking thru drifts more than a couple feet high.

Speaking of boots, has anyone here tried the Adidas GSG9s?

Last year, we were issued cold weather boots similar to these sorel's. They have worked fine!

If you find yourself in need of cold weather boots, then, you need to transfer to where you don't need them. That would be my advice.

Those are too heavy, bulky, uncomfortable, and they don't keep your feet as warm.

I like where I work during the summer. I just have to deal with the winter until I get back to summer!

I've been using Columbia Ice Crushers for the past two seasons. You can buy them in black so they look better than the Sorels. They're also not as clunky for driving or running. For chain control I carry a pair of 100-below Baffin's. Standing out in it for hours on end will task any pair of cold weather boots. I don't wear my Chippewa's or Danner's during the winter. The Chippewa's have a steel toe which just refrigerates your toes. The Danner's also don't provide enough insulation. Plus the snow, cinders, and mud just ruin the finish on both.

Ahhh...finally I'm not the only one around Truckee on here anymore! I have a pair of Columbia Titanium (or something like that for the model) boots. They are rated at -65 and have been working pretty good so far....I'm working graveyards at a ski resort up here, so they've definately been tested. They seemed kinda expensive at Mountain Hardware in Truckee, but the price was pretty much the same as what i was seeing at places in Reno. They're probably not close to whatever regulation the officers on here have to follow about which boots they can wear, but otherwise are pretty nice boots.
