I was wondering If any of you CHP Officers have any photos of your new and old Smith&Wesson 4006's and your Smith&Wesson (Smith@Wesson) Model 68 38 spl revolver? I also have a Question did any officer in the 1980's carry 357 Magnum revolvers and what kind of revolvers did you carry?
Thank you all I hope you can help me with some photos and my question I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

No pictures but I will tell you that I carried a Smith & Wesson Model 19, 6" .357 magnum from 1966 until the CHP converted to automatics.

Carried a Ruger GP100 6" .357 magnum for only a couple of years before the 4006.
Carried a 4" S&W Model 28, then a 6" S&W 586 before the transition to the 4006.

What load was used? 158 grain JSP @ 1235fps? 125 grain SJHP @ 1450fps?

I carried the .38 S/W from 1975 until we went to the .40 Cal semi's.
I also carried the .38 in the old "suicide pouch" holster that was standard state issue in those days. Many a time I was out on a stop only to discover that my weapon had once again remained on the driver's seat as I exited the unit.
I finally smartened up and bought a Bianchi break front holster.
The S/W .38 may not have had much punch, but it never misfired and was a reliable companion once it was placed in a proper holster.

The revolvers were reliable indeed, however the State-issued .38 special 110 grain "controlled-expansion" round was abysmal in performance.
I can still recall the shooting incident over 20 years ago in the Needles area, when a CHP sergeant shot an armed robbery suspect in the head with this round, and the bullet richocheted off of the suspect's head.
Fortunately, the CHP eventually allowed us to carry our privately owned .357 Magnum revolvers with the State-issued 125 grain JHP round.

Good reference work for most everything up to 1989.

That would be 158 grain JSP to the best of my recollection. Although at some point the department started issuing ammo and it was the 125 grain.
I think they were worried about the 158 grain going through the suspect, disemboweling the suspect, traveling through an engine block and killing some kid in a school yard a mile away............

Yeah, the .357 Magnum 158 grain JSPs have a history of tending to over penetrate (although I've never actually heard of one making it though an engine block ).
The 125 grain JHP Magnum loads have shallower penetration; typically about 10 inches when fired into 10% ballistic gelatin, IIRC.

Thank you for the photo the gun is the right gun, but the CHP vertion has a spur less hammer and a picatinny style rail instead of the black rail. Just got my new S&W LE catalog and they have the new CHP 4006TSW and the 4566TSW 45ACP with the Picatinny rail and the 5906 9MM with the older rail.

Yeah, I know the CHP has some different features on their 4006TSWs, so they aren't exactly like the one on the S&W page. That was just the best thing I had handy.
