Well, there really isn?t any set number. You can pretty much count on 60-120 every 3 months. I would say the average is more like 80 cadets every 3 months with around 20 percent washing out in the academy. These aren?t numbers that are set in stone, just what I have observed over the years.
Since the end of the hiring freeze, how often has the CHP been running an academy?

no, not really.
they're running academies quarterly. heard a rumor yesterday that they're expecting to put 190 people into the next class. they started with 90 last class.

When we're in "full swing", it's usually either 4 or 5 Academy classes a year. As far as the number of officers the department is hiring, I don't know that there's any set figure - we'll hire until the state tells us we can't hire any more. Maybe DW knows some concrete numbers, but basically we'll take as many as we can get!

I heard the rooms were going to be quad-bunked, so a quad would really be a quad-squared.
Okay, that wasn't really funny, but whatever. It's been a long day.

The numbers seem to change depending on who you talk to and what day of the week it is. Mac's right, we're running continuous classes, usually four per year, with no end in sight. It's also safe to say they're being filled with as many Cadets as possible. The classes since the freeze have been 90 Cadets, and starting with the March class they should be well over 100.
Is there a start date set for the class after March?

They're trying to fill a class of 125 for CTC 1-06, which starts in March. Look for much larger class sizes starting with 3-06, if all goes well with the budget. The powers that be are realizing that currently the Officer production at the Academy is not keeping up with attrition.
Here's how you can tell when the classes start... The classes are currently 27 weeks long. The next class starts on the second monday after a graduation. CTC 4-05 started on November 14th, 2005, goes 27 weeks and graduates on May 19th, 2006. There is a one week period when CTC 1-06 gets all the love from Academy staff, then CTC 2-06 starts on May 29th.
CoCo is getting cadets out of this Academy class, I hear. Wow, there is a rarity.

When's the last time THAT happened?? I don't even remember the last time I've seen a Cadet go into CoCo.
We had one in 1998. Thats the only one I remember. On top of that I hear we are getting 4!! We don't even have any FTO's.
Should be fun.

Do you know why it's so rare that Contra Costa gets officers directly from the academy? Just curious.
Do you know why it's so rare that Contra Costa gets officers directly from the academy? Just curious. To get officers directly from the academy, an area has to have unfilled openings with no transfers on file from more senior officers. There are some offices that people rarely leave, and when they do, there's a long line of transfers waiting to get in - and apparently CoCo is one such office. There are some offices in the state which have NEVER taken a new officer from the academy.

What are some of the offices that never take new officers? Which offices are the ones that have openings every year due to people transfering out and have no waiting list to get in?
What are some of the offices that never take new officers? Which offices are the ones that have openings every year due to people transfering out and have no waiting list to get in?It varies from list to list - but you can pretty much count on the metro LA offices to have openings almost every academy class (South, Central, West and East LA, Santa Fe Springs). The Bay Area offices take new officers pretty consistently, San Diego gets them sporadically, El Cajon even more sporadically, and the desert offices take them once in a while also. The Inland Empire offices (Riverside, San Bernardino, Rancho Cucamonga, Victorville, etc.) have been pretty much locked up because many officers moved out there while housing was very affordable and now they're all trying to transfer there to get closer to home.
There are a lot of offices that don't regularly take new officers - from Humboldt/Crescent City/Chico/Quincy/Susanville/Redding/Red Bluff, etc. in the north to Temecula/Oceanside/Capistrano, etc. in the south, and tons in-between (Amador/Tracy/Buttonwillow/Mariposa/Oakhurst, etc.). There are a few eye-openers in almost every graduating academy class, though - Grass Valley took one a few classes ago, and this class is sending the above-mentioned one to CoCo, as well as one to the Lone Pine Resident Post! Bottom line is, LA and the Bay Area are pretty much a given, but you never know exactly what else will pop up.

How does break-in work if someone goes to a resident post fresh out of the academy? Aern't they basically alone?

I once spoke with (was cited by) an officer in Mariposa. He told me that he broke in in the Fresno office before he reported to Mariposa. I'm assuming it would work the same at a residence post, break in in a larger office, and then move to the post.

Break-in will be completed at an Area office... Not sure if anything special happens between that and the RP. Rat?

Two classes ago, one went to the Death Valley RP. You never know what might be available.
When I was on my ride along, the officer I was with told me that they had a new officer in training that was able to get the El Cajon office. He told me that it just depends if you have a hardship or not and if there is a current opening but that it really doesn't happen that often. I would love to be abe to come back to San Diego out of the academy but since my hometown is L.A, anywhere down there would be great.
