Sorry, Central Division
Edit: looking at "beaver"'s map (http://www.castorophoto.com/CHP-CTC-II-and-III--06.jpg) of 06 assignments shows only a couple for Central. I would have thought at least Fresno would have got a few. A lot of transfer requests to go into Central?
Nope - no Central Division, no Valley Division.
None for Central, is that usual? We are working on renaming Central Division "Fantasyland".

Pure luck o' the draw. If there's an opening and nobody has their transfer in at the moment, it gets filled by a new officer. Sometimes officers miss the boat by not putting in a transfer because they don't think they have the seniority to get there, then BAM! Somebody suddenly transfers out, retires, etc. and that opening comes up. You snooze, you lose.

You would think that if someone on the job had any thought of going to a RP, they would put in for it every time the wish list was sent out.

Doesn't work like that BC, you either have a transfer in or you don't have one in. If one is in and you get it you must go. So only put one in if you really want to leave where you are.
Good luck to all on their ride alongs this weekend!

Four to RP's? Don't agree with that, but if that's were the vacancies are at then that's where they go. Good luck to them.

Thank you!! IMHO putting a new Officer in an RP is a huge disservice to the Officer. That first year on is so important, and an RP just can't provide the experience a new Officer should be exposed to. I think the Department is foolish in allowing the practice. Some Areas are smart:biggrin:, and advertise an upcoming opening...with as many Officers as we have...if the RP is advertised, it usually gets filled on the next volume transfer. Other Areas....not so smart:confused:

Well said Yzeman. I totally agree, but was staying away from this thread until someone else spoke up. (By the way, Yzeman and I both have a little or a lot, in his case of expertise in this particular subject). I wouldn't even consider an RP unless I had about three to five years on the road in a busy area first. I only hope they give the ones selected som OJT in the area for awhile before just dropping them off break-in into an RP. It really is a disservice to a new officer.
I don't want to start an argument. But I am curious how they handle break in at a RP. I agree it doesn't seem like a good idea. But, how can a FTO be out at a RP? I just don't get the semantics.

They break in at the nearest office and then they start at the RP
This was true at one time. I had officers from a resident post at my FTO training in October. They were there because they wanted to break-in the new officers at the resident post area rather than the surrounding areas. The reasoning was that the new officers would complete their break-in, but have no area orientation upon starting at their RP.

RP sounds like a sweet gig, are they related to someone "special" in the CHP, like a son/daughter of an area commander?
FTO at a RP must be a joke (let's take turns sleeping?) compared with someone assigned to a big metropolitan area such as LA, SF, SJ, SD, etc...

Makes sense doesn't it ....... Lets not send any to Fresno... I mean our fatal rate is only 3 or 4 over 100 right now and a whole month to go. So much for "sending the people to where they are needed".:doh::doh: ...........

Not necessarily a list, but an advertisement.....
I remember an old one about an opening @ the Shoshone RP. I wish I still had the MIS.
It talked the area up.... lots of sand (no beach), plenty on Sun (into the 100's), Plenty of freedom (no beat partners for 100's of miles), but best of all, No Sgt for at least two hours.......

Where a new officer FTO’s depends on the area they are reporting to, and the abilities and resources of the RP itself. Most of the time, the new officer will FTO in the area the RP belongs to, then be sent to the RP when they finish. Some areas don’t have the activity, and/or the resources to properly complete the training of a new officer, and will send them to an adjoining area to complete their training. Other areas have the resources within the RP, and will complete the entire process within the Resident Post itself. Again, IMHO…how they are trained is irrelevant…I don’t feel a new Officer should be sent to the RP in the first place (I worked several years in an RP myself, so I feel somewhat qualified to speak on the issue). Remember, when an Officer completes FTO, that does not mean they know all there is to know…it only means they know the minimum required to do the job. My point is not against the officer, rather it is against the Department’s practice allowing new officers to be put in that position…again, I feel it is a disservice to the officer.
I'll get off my soapbox now...next...

Back from SoCal. Looks as though they are starting to put in more lanes on the 15 betwen Vegas and Barstow. It's about time. I was visiting my brother and he said he works with the CHP out of the Oceanside office. Are there any CHiPs from this office on here? I would love to be assigned to that office. Has this ever happened to a cadet upon breakin? He also told me that CHP will make a call to dispatch to turn off his lights when he is making a stop(he doesn't still). Is this just so the lookyloos don't slow traffic because they have to see what is happening. Also wouldn't it be a matter of officer safety for my brother to turn off his overheads when making a stop?

Not a CHP Officer but an explorer from that office. I beieve the reason why a CHP Officer would not want the overhead lights on is because lights at night attract DUI drivers like a magnet. Plus why would you need all those lights on anyway? Maybe some clear ones but thats about it.

Yes and this is why he leaves them on as I stated above. Also I don't think I stated but he is in BP.
He also told me that CHP will make a call to dispatch to turn off his lights when he is making a stop (he doesn't still).:question::question::question::question:
Obviously he needs someone to explain too him the dangers of the freeway...... or stay off. Not only is HIS safety at risk, he's creating danger for other motorist and guess who gets to clean up the mess ????
He's an officer & a brother. He should be open enough to ask a CHP officer why?.... In person.

I don't understand the system I guess. I thought that if you wanted to transfer, you would put in the appropriate form with the location you wanted to go, and when it was your turn, you go...
In a nutshell, that's how it works. You file a transfer request, and when there's an opening and you're the next in line seniority-wise (with a few exceptions such as bilingual needs), you go. If you don't get your transfer, the request stays on file for successive transfer lists until you either get it or decide to cancel your request. If you do get your transfer, you're going...if you've changed your mind in the meantime and didn't cancel your transfer request in time, too bad - you can always file another one to go back where you came from (or wherever else), but you will fill that open slot.
Where officers miss out is when they don't file a transfer request because they don't think they could possibly get to a certain office with their seniority (or lack thereof), are in the process of trying to convince their significant other that it's a good idea, or just plain procrastinated - and then, by some freak occurrence, an opening pops up. Somebody more junior who was more optimistic about their chances (or a lucky Cadet/new Officer) gets that prime slot instead, and now the officer who wanted to go there has to wait for another opening.
Is there a "List" put out of the vacant locations available to transfer to ahead of time?:noidea:
No. You can call Personnel and find out what your transfer ranking into an office would be, but they can't tell you if/when/how many openings there might be at any given time.

That brings to mind the Cadet who got South Lake Tahoe about four years ago and the 17grander who is going to Gold Run in March. They got where they want to be but I hope they don't mind working Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Super Bowl Sunday, and all the other highly sought after days. The good news for them is they can probably get ground hog day.

Soooo, if an Officer wanted to go to Area XYZ, they put in a request to transfer to Area XYZ. When an opening occurs at Area XYZ, and their seniority is right, they get to transfer to Area XYZ. The transfer request isn't for "A transfer to anywhere", but to a specific office?
Bottom line...If you want to transfer to a specific area, put in for it right now, and when it is your time, you will get there...

Thats the beauty of living in your area. If you work on a holiday you get to spend some time with la familia between checking your beat and answering your calls. And if your a stand-up guy, you let those who live out of the area take the day off so they can spend time with their familia. Ain't nothing wrong with having a favor owed to cash in some day.
Thanks HD, and congrats right back at you. Our casa is about to get a bit crowded but full of love. I know a young man who will be looking for a wife in about 24 years and I'll throw in 5 chickens. Care to sign a contract now?
We'll miss you at the San Jo kids party. Guess who gets to play the jolly round guy this year

Yep, that's the bottom line.
Actually, when you fill out a transfer you can request Area X, Area Y and/or Area Z (up to 3 Areas). That transfer will stay on file until you get your transfer to any one of those three Areas. Now comes the thinking part - list them in the order you'd prefer them, because if Area Z and Area X both come open at the same time and Area Z is listed first on your transfer request, you're going to Area Z. If you really would rather have gone to Area X, it should have been listed first!

Once you put in a transfer and the transfer filing period ends, you usally find out if you get it in about 5-6 weeks. The transfer list just came out last Friday for assignment in Sept. Once this transfer period ends (Didn't see the date) the transfer will be effective around January 1st. Some people call in before and see approximately where they are and if they have a chance of getting their spot. I have transfered 3 times (Back and forth from the same offices) and got my transfers on the first time (Bakersfield and West Valley).

All right, I’m uneducated, I’ll admit it. Could someone please tell me what the differences are between a regular post and a resident post?
All right, I’m uneducated, I’ll admit it. Could someone please tell me what the differences are between a regular post and a resident post?
Resident posts are located in more remote areas. Officers are assigned a take-home vehicle and essentially work out of their residence on a daily basis.

We, my husband was in CTC III-07, were given the list on a Wednesday and had to turn in the rankings on the following Monday. I think it varies by class though, as I have heard some get less time.
My son's class got it on Monday and had to turn it in that Thurs.
