View Full Version : So, I'd like to join CHP...
Well currently I'm working WITH the US Navy along side with Master At Arms & ASF. I'm not in the military but have been thinking about it to increase my chances of getting hired. CHP along with many other agencies interest me and I'm starting to apply now. I'm currently not enrolled in any college classes, nor have I taken any besides PC 832. I'd like any and all the advice those who are current Law Enforcement weither PD, Sheriff, or CHP. Any advice on what would increase my chances of getting hired would be very helpful. I know I could pass the written and all the other parts of the hiring process. My only problem is that, at this moment I don't offer many things ex. college, military, or prior LE. I have taken 2 written (passed) and plan on attending LAPD written test next week. I am 22 and live in the city of San Diego.
Thanks in advance for everyones help.

I tell every hopefull the same thing, Volunteer, Volunteer, Volunteer. Military is desired, but in my CTC we only had about 10 of us, as opposed to the 80 other men/women who did not have military experience. If you chose to go into the military, it could take you a minimum of a 1-2 years before you could actually go to the academy. I had to go to basic (8wks) Tech school(7 months) and then you finally get the base you are stationed at. Then you would have the normal wait of PAT,QAP, Backgrounds,MED,PHYSCH. It could take you awhile! If you've got the time, then its not a big deal + it is nice to have a second retirement.

Don't let the lack of military experience get you down. As the Rat said, now would be a good time to Volunteer and start learning about the Department. Many applicants have no college, military, or prior LE and do quite well in the process.

Well Thank you very much for your reply and thank you Rat also. I know someone who used to be prior Marines then US Customs who does volunteer for CHP and give me a name of an Officer to talk to. I recently got his number so I'll give him a call and request an application.
Also just for your info, about 6 months ago I did call the CHP station in El Cajon, CA to ask if they do take anyone willing to Volunteer and they said no. I do have a number to a closer CHP station where that Officer is stationed at so I'll give them a call to see about doing volunteer work.

You are not limited to CHP offices for volunteer work. You can also volunteer at hospitals, charitable organizations, churches, other agencies, etc. Find a cause that is aligned with your beliefs and ask if they could use your help. Any volunteer work will make make you a better candidate as well as providing much needed assistance to someone.

San Diego PD has a lot of volunteer stuff, beside reserves. Telephone report volunteer would probally be good experience.
Just my $.02, but if I were on a panel, I think it would be more appealing if someone did volunteer work outside of law enforcement... Broaden your horizons. It almost seems like you're trying too hard if you volunteer in LE. Then again, the experience you would get could certainly be beneficial.

Volunteer for any organization that you are interested in. They aren't just looking for you to have volunteered for the CHP or any other agency. I worked with the Civil Air Patrol(USAF Auxiliary). Sort of a two part bonus...It showed that I was willing to give time back and I was also able to do search and rescue and get flight observer training. Finding something that interests you might just keep you motivated enough to help you focus on your goals.

How about becoming a Volunteer Fireperson? Most volunteer fire departments welcome young volunteers. It is an excellent way to learn a bit about code three emergency vehicle operation, first aid, traffic control, radio communication, etc. You also meet people in the emergency field such as police officers, CHP officers, para medics etc. who might be able to provide a reference.
If there is a volunteer fire depart near you go there and talk to the Chief. You will be surprised at how badly your services are needed by your community.

Be careful about getting involved as a volunteer firefighter...you might end up liking it...In High school, my plan was to become a Police Officer. I was a Police Explorer, and eventually became the Commander of our Post. Whil in High School, I dated the Fire Chief's daughter(s) (3 of them) and started hanging around the fire stations (a lot!)....31 years later, I'm getting ready to retire, FROM THE FIRE DEPARTMENT!!!
Whatever you do, give it your whole heart and you will succeed...
