135 gallon. And I guess I will be doing all the maintenance while he is away
Since we live close to the academy though, he will be home on weekends, even though I know he wont have alot of time to do much with it, but at least he will be able to check and make sure Im doing everything right! We also have a good friend who owns his own maintenance company so if something happens I can just call him or any of his other "reef-geek" friends! I should get my husband to post on here, sounds like you both have alot in common.
What size tank do you have?

My wife and I have a 24 gallon tank with five differant clown fish and serveral corals. Once we get a more permanent place to live we plan on starting a larger reef tank.

I don't have a reef aquarium but I do have a 25 gallon fresh water fish tank. It is a cool hobby and the fish are awesome. I clean mine twice a year and replace the filters about every 2 months. Oh yeah, chicks dig it!

I had a 25 gallon aquarium. I had a blue gill in it. He started out at 3 inches long and within three months that thing was 7 inches long and fat. He used to eat grass hoppers out of my hand. I fed him anything from cat food to feeder fish. I would dump 50 feeders in there and they would be gone in two weeks. The bummer is he ate all the fish including my bug eyed moores. He was the coolest thing ever.

WOW 135 huh! That's HUGE! I bet that cost a lot?

I don't have one...yet. I made some plans and called around to get some quotes but my biggest concern is the academy.
I doubt i'll be there any time soon but I don't want to leave this burden on my girlfriends shoulders.
Anyway, I was looking to build a custom cube 16x16x20 with matching black acrylic canopy/stand and T-5 Power compacts. (approximately 35gallons.)
Does your husband have Metal Halides? SPS corals?
I'd love to see some pics of your husbands tank if you have any?

Actually, we got the tank for free. His buddy, who owns his own maintenance co. gave it to us. One of his customers was getting rid of it because the center brace broke. My husband fixed the center brace and then he traded some computer work in exchange for a custom built canopy that his friend, who is a contractor, made for us.
The only thing we have bought are the fish and have had them for more than a year now. Even most of the corals he has have come from frags that have grown. He used to have SPS, but has since traded them all for softies. Im not sure about the metal hallides, I know he used to have them but he recently changed his lighting, I dont pay attention to that stuff only whats actually in the tank
Im on a laptop right now and dont have pics on here but he said he would post some tommorrow. Are you ever on reefcentral.com? My husband wanted to know.

I haven't signed up with reefcenteral.com, I usually hang out on
nano-reef.com but if your husband has a user on their website I can for sure look him up?

Just an update: I laid down $750 for a custom acrylic/black formica tank. (16x16x20) I know, I know, for those of you chippies that's chump change but for the "average joe" that's large sum.
I'll put up some pics in about two weeks when they finish it.http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/mesg/tsmileys2/03.gif

thanks!
The tank was so expensive because it's custom. The tank is coming pre-drilled/internal overflow with two returns. I got another quote for $650 but I didn't trust the work. I went with Aquarium city because they have been in business for over 43 years & I know them pretty well.
If you are in need of anything reef related (lights, corals, fish, etc) you should check this place out: ATAfish.com It's pretty close to wholesale prices! (& it's in the area depending on your location.)

I've found a program which I'm sure most of you have heard of (google Sketchup) which is new to me. It took me three hours to figure out this but I thought I would share some insight on how it will come out.
