View Full Version : CHP Model Cars
Hi there, I just found this forum and thought I'd share some of the CHP models I've made. I'm not sure if this goes here or in the off-topic, but here goes. These are all in 1:18 scale.

welcome and nice job!!! i like how the mustang is a shelby
Thanks for the welcome. On the hood of the K-9 car are hood vents which helps keep the engine cool during extended idling.

I've never seen those before. I wonder if those are something they install on units that work the in the desert areas? They install them on K9 cars. If the dog is in the car, the engine will be left running so the A/C can be on.
Q - VERY nice job on the models!

Q,
Those are awesome! Did you make those custom by yourself, or did they come in a kit like most models? I'm kind of into building models myself and would love to know where I could find a chp kit.
The cars themselves are pre-built die-cast, but I take them apart, repaint, detail and scratchbuild a lot of parts (pushbars, K9 insert, etc.). The decals I buy from a hobby shop. I've built a few other agency vehicles also. If you're interested, they're at www.picturetrail.com/qcon under 1:18 Customs. Here are a few more of the CHP models.

Very nice work. I used to build functioning model airplanes out of balsa, a little different than scale cars; but I know it's a tedious process, that too requires a lot of patience and motivation. Respect.

Q,I've got close to 100 die cast cars (most of them race cars) in my garage. Do you collect anything other than LE vehicles?

Very Nice Q.
I might be interested in purchasing one from you if you sell them. Specifically the SMPV (all white) car, as I drive an SMPV. Just FYI, and I am not sure if it is statewide or if my car is special, but on the back of my car, it doesn't have the 'highway patrol' stickers on the trunk lid, its blank.
Chipper
Chipper, I haven't thought about selling any, but I can probably make a model of your car. It might be in the $50-60 range, though. Does yours have a lightbar?
Wow. Nice work. If you decide to sell them, feel free to post them in the classifieds section.
I don't think any of the SMPV's had lettering on the back. I know it can be ordered, but I haven't seen any with it.
16528 would probably buy one if you made an A-Star. ;)

That sounds very reasonable price wise, and no mine is a slick top. My camaro had a LED lightbar, but its since been ran out and auctioned off  so now its just a slow CV everyday!!

Hmm..looks like I need to remove the decal on the trunk lid. What does SMPV stand for, anyhow?
Chipper, are you still using a console or have you upgraded to the tachnet system? Full wheel covers or center caps? Tan, full carpet? Do you have any photos of your car (interior, exterior, antenna configuration, emergency lighting, etc.). I believe the newer cars have a different pushbar mount than the older ones, too. This would be helpful in figuring out what I need to do to replicate it.
I should be getting a 2002 Camaro model in the mail soon, so I'll be marking that one with CHP decals, also. Anyone have pics of the interior of an in-service Camaro?
SB405, I collect way too many things for my own good. 1:18 die-cast, 1:35 armor, 1:72 air, 1:6 military and LE. I run the design studio for a collectibles company so collecting things is right up my alley.

Specially Marked Patrol Vehicle
Some cars have Tachnet, most do not. We are going to center caps on all vehicles.

Console, center caps, my interior is a blue/greyish color. The CV is a 2004 model, and the emergency lighting is the back deck lights like you have on the one you posted pictures of. I also have a light mounted on the windshield near the rear view mirror that is the LED style solid red with blinking blue. Large CB antenna on right rear quarter panel which is white with a red tip (?) I think we stole a blind persons cane or something for that  If you need pictures, I can take some with my digital and send them to you.

I'll get them for you in the morning
Chipper, your car shouldn't be too hard to do. I'll just do everything I did to my current model. If you can, can you take shots of your pushbar (specifically, the mounts), roof antenna and window antenna (one on top, two on the window?), and the front facing emergency lights, that would be great. The only issue I can think of is shipping. The antenna are tall and won't fit in the original packaging. They will probably break off in shipping, too, if they package is roughly handled.
16528, thanks! Looking forward to the pictures.

My luck; Its in the shop getting the tranny replaced... As soon as we get it back, I'll get them for you.
There was a company that came to the office a while back and took a bunch of pictures of my Camaro (at the time) and said they were going to produce a die cast; I have yet to see it..
Awesome, thanks!. I wonder which company shot your Camaro.

Awesome...thanks for the pictures. No MDT in the Camaro? Interesting place for the shotgun, too. I should be getting a 1:18 Camaro, soon, so these shots will be extremely useful.
Chipper, I just got the supplies to make a new SMPV. If you're still interested, give me the go ahead and I can start working on it. It will probably take a couple weeks since I have only weekends to work on it.

If you look behind the CB there's a bracket with a hole. The MDC mounts there and swivels out of the way.

Actually, I haven't thought about doing an SFPD car since I don't see them too often. I took a quick look at some pictures online and it seems that there are all sorts of pushbars and lightbars in use. Is there a standard now?
Were all white Camaros more prevalent than the black and whites? I received an all black Camaro and am trying to decide which paint scheme to use. Thanks!

Black and white Camaros were given to division offices for public affairs and so on.. If I remember correctly there were 73 white and 12 black and whites with 4 going to the acacemy for EVOC use.

Chipper
01-19-2006, 06:22 PM
Actually, my back is worse now than in the Camaro. I know that seems strange, as its usually the opposite. I think the reason why I didn't have back issues was because my personal car at the time was a Camaro. So I drove one at home and one at work (just no gun belt at home)
I just miss cutting the center divider and getting on these 90+ speeds in a heartbeat. With the CV, you have time to eat a sandwich while catching up to the fast ones!

The City (district station) cars and Airport cars are the differentiation. The City (district station) cars have strobes with a rectangular light bar, and standard pushbars. The Airport cars look a lot like CHP cars with the bubble light bars.
Oh well thanks anyway... Nice models though!
Nonsequitur, let me think about it. It shouldn't be too hard to do. I would need some good shots of the front, right side, left side, back and top of the car, and a good close up shot of the star on the door to make decals. Interior shots and antenna shots would be very helpful, too. I saw a couple pictures of a low profile lightbar that's mounted just above the windshield...which unit uses that? It looks like all cars have the CB antenna on the left rear quarter panel too.

I actually thought about attempting to do one myself, but after seeing what you can do it would be awesome to see one "professionally" done. I will take my digital camera to work when I go back on Thursday and get some shots of my usual car, 1197...

Hey Q at what hobbie shop did you buy the CHP Decals at?? Including lights and all that fun stuff?
What I found from a quick search:
http://www.houseofhobbies.com/ch1chpladech.html
http://www.policecarmodels.com/ind.html <<< If you are looking for other departments.
Q--any more sources that you would suggest?
House of Hobbies is about 30 min from me and that's where I get my decals. Good guys and they have a giant selection of decals (mostly 1:24 scale), and police equipment. 1:18 lightbars usually come with cars, but aren't necessarily that great. The vector I have on the Expedition was a recast, so I could paint it with the right color scheme. You can buy 1:18 vectors, mx-7000, and I think the nighthawk at that shop. They only have one type of pushbar, so I usually make my own. If I don't find commercial decals, I make my own, like my 1:18 UCPD and VCSD cars.
Policecarmodels.com is also a pretty good site. I think the two places might be related since they're both in Burbank.
Chipper, does your car have a cage? Thanks.
Q
Here are a few quick pics of the Camaro in progress. I haven't touched the interior yet. So far, I've given it a new paint job, speaker holes in the bumper, decals and a LED lightbar. Still need to do antennas and the interior.

How much do you charge?
Chipper, the only good reference photo I've been able to find for the K9 is this one. It has a dog (German Shepherd?)decal on the C-pillar. Maybe it's not a standard decal. Some shots of his lightbar would be cool, too. Thanks!
http://pic3.picturetrail.com/VOL15/631045/1559371/131927574.jpg
405, yeah, I decided to hand deliver since it wouldve gotten destroyed had I shipped it. The antenna wouldn't fit in its standard box and a couple of good drops would have knocked off a few parts.
CHP, I charged $75 for this one (basically just cost on parts and labor), but I typically don't sell the cars. I probably didn't make any money, but I did have fun doing it. I don't have a lot of time to indulge in my hobbies anymore, unfortunately. And shipping becomes another issue. I'm more inclined to do one for an active or retired officer of their actual car.

That is amazing work Q!! One question, how do you make the antennas? I am somewhat of a modeler myself and am always dissapointed with my results for the antenna. I am currently working on a 1:18th early 90's CHP Mustang and would like to make it as realistic as possible.
The work you do Q remarkable. The posting of the pictures from start to finish is even better, because we all get to see your project come to life with the officers comments about their own personal vehicals. I am sure that I am not the only one that hopes to request your services in the future.
Thanks!
I use small gauge wire I found at the model store a while back for the antenna. I'm just about out, so I need to go find some more. I hope they have it still. I never mastered the stretched sprue technique, and wire looks really good. The antenna bases are styrene. Same as the GPS antenna disks I have on some of the model cars.

I'm not happy with how the white decals on black look right now so I have to figure out how to make them turn out better. I still haven't redone the spotlights or the interior (don't know what the inside looks like) and haven't added any antenna yet.

Q, the SFPD car looks too clean, there needs to be a few dents in the fender or doors. Really nice job, though, except the lack of realism, JK.

Haha, the same was said about the NYPD car I'm working on. I need to find something that'll put a good dent into the thick metal body of the model.

Q-
Just what are the supplies you use to do your work? What paint do you use? How do you paint on the police/911 logos? Where do you get that pushbar? I've been thinking about making these model cars too, as a hobby of course.
Is that 1:18 or 1:24 scale?
Thx and keep up the good work!

ditto to what NorCal said. Finally a real model replica car with actuall detail. Amaizing job. Have you thought about a model CHP bicycle.
How do you post a picture? I tried but this is what happened
CHP has bicycles? I have a 1:18 CHP BMW Motor, but I haven't put any detailing into it since I'm not familiar with the details. To post pictures, I host them on my site, and link them here.
The SFPD car (as are most of my models) are 1:18. They're more accurate than the 1:24 and you can put much more detail into them. If I need to repaint, I use Tamiya paints from cans. The decals I make using my printer and decal sheets from the hobby store. The only limitation is printing white, since most printers can't do that. You need one of those out of production ALPS printers to do that. My solution is to print on a white decal sheet with a printed black border. The pushbars I make out of styrene plastic, which can also be found at the hobby store.

So do you take the car apart and paint each and every part seperately first? Do you have a website that shows all your photos by any chance? Did you do any other police agencies?
Thanks and I just can't stop admiring your work.
If I need to paint, I'll completely disassemble the car and mask off windows, etc.

Yup, CHP has bicycles. There are only four area offices that have a bike patrol (capitol, marin, santa barbara, truckee). I am fortunate to be on the bicycle patrol unit....its the best job on the highway patrol! It would be awesome if you could do a bicycle, I'll e-mail you a pic of my patrol bike Q.

My K9 diorama won 2nd place in the 1:18 Category at last weekend's Weekend of Heroes show in Ontario. Originally, I had planned on having a brick wall with the K9 patch mounted, but after some thought, a monument with the patch looked like it would turn out better.

Q
The shotgun was held in a locking rack mounted forward against the dashboard between the seats, with the shotgun held upright. We didn't have AR-15s then - we were still using the Mini-14, and they were either mounted in the trunk or not carried in the Mustang.

Hey Mac,
Why doesn't the CHP mount the shotgun against the dashboard today? Is it because of safety concerns?
Hey Mac,
Why doesn't the CHP mount the shotgun against the dashboard today? Is it because of safety concerns?
Pretty much.....when airbags became standard equipment, it was discovered that the front-mounted shotgun rack could interfere with the deployment of the airbags. The other problem is there's not enough room in the cars anymore with the new radio heads, computers, etc.
Hi all, haven't posted in a while. Thought I'd share the pretty much finished Camaro. All haven't added any radio heads just yet. Hope you like!

Amazing work Q, I am impressed! What scale are those? They look like 1:18th. I am working on a 1:18th 1990 Mustang, need to step it up and get some pics up. I am converting it from a New York State Police since the only CHP Mustang made in 1:18th is a mid 80's with the non-flush headlamps and I wanted one from the early 90's.

Q,
Excellent work! I love the Expedition. Where did you find the base models? I've looked online and have only found lowered Expeditions with ground effects package.
Hi,
The Camaro is 1:18 scale, which is the best scale to work with in my opinion. It's big enough to put some pretty good detail in and small enough that they don't take up an enormous amount of space. Most of my cars are 1:18.
bg17067, the Expedition is made by Autoart. I believe they're out of production, but some good deals can be had on Ebay. Expect to pay $20-30 for one. I removed the fender moulding and the running board from the stock Expedition, painted the wheels black, painted the doors and roof white, tinted the windows with automotive tint, added the spotlights, antenna and lightbar, and fabricated the front bumper and direction lightstick.

I don't know how I missed this topic before...nice work Q.
There is one authenticity suggestion I am surprised that no one mentioned. I have taken the liberty to assist you. Watch the mail for a very small chocolate bar and a tiny cup of coffee.
The chocolate bar can be used on the seats or can be dropped down between the gun rack and the seats and then left in the sun. The tiny coffee cup should be sealed with a miny lid then then left to roll around on the passenger side floor board so the carpet staining is more of a random patern!
Do you do figures too?
Chocolate bar...check.
Coffee cup...check.
I work on figures, too, in 1:6 scale. Here's a couple you might like:

I know they don't exist, but if they did, they'd probably look something like this. It's 1:24 scale...a little over 2 ft. long. I hand made the bed, wheel lift, and stretched the frame to fit it. The car, equipped with deployed air bags, is secured correctly at all four corners, just the way CHP likes it. This has won numerous awards throughout the midwest, and is my tribute to the highway patrolmen I've worked with in the past who made my job safer and easier.
