CHP Officer Hit By Driver, Seriously Injured
A California Highway Patrol officer was seriously injured Tuesday night while working an accident on a dangerous stretch of roadway.
Officer Michael Remmel's condition was upgraded to serious Wednesday night. He was responding to a crash scene at Highway 49, just north of Sonora, when he was hit by a truck.
Officials said Remmel was hit so hard that he landed 30 feet away and suffered major injuries to his legs.
Investigators said that the 79-year-old woman who hit Remmel had no idea she hit someone.
"When she was told that she actually struck a CHP officer, she was in shock and actually broke down and cried," said CHP Officer Tom Wills.
