Have any of you heard of this before?

I heard about this on the news recently... I'm surprised that no groups (A_LU?) have opposed this. I've argued this kind of technology is the key to resolving pursuits in the future.

Of course, everything can be disabled/hacked, but luckily we're not working against the smartest members of society.

I think they should just make one adjustment. That dash warning should read..."speed being reduced, your ass now belongs to me"

I have been using this for awhile. When I take a stolen on a GM product I always ask if they have On-Star. If they do I have dispatch and the owner call and get a location for the vehicle as soon as its entered into the system. It usually takes a little time but it works great. I did however learn the hard way. When a parent wanted there car back and they reported it stolen just so On-Star would tell them where it is. :hitwall:

Does the victim have to be an On-Star subscriber to get its location? (Versus the hardware with no subscription.)

This is from the FAQ section of the OnStar site.

1. What is Stolen Vehicle Slowdown?
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is the newest enhancement to OnStar's stolen vehicle service that is expected to help reduce the risk of serious injuries, fatalities or property damages resulting from high speed chases involving stolen vehicles.
This new technology allows OnStar to send a signal to a subscriber's stolen vehicle to remotely limit fuel flow to the engine which will slow the vehicle down gradually. The Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service is another example of OnStar's continued commitment to unparalleled subscriber security and public safety.
OnStar Advisors can activate Stolen Vehicle Slowdown once the subscribers have reported their vehicle stolen and law enforcement at the scene verify the identity and location of the stolen vehicle and confirm that conditions are safe.
2. How does Stolen Vehicle Slowdown work?
Using the in-vehicle communications link, the OnStar Advisor can remotely connect with the stolen vehicle and send a slowdown signal to the vehicle's OnStar system. The OnStar system then interacts with the Powertrain system to limit fuel flow to the engine which will slow the vehicle down gradually. Pressing on the accelerator during the slowdown process will not increase the vehicle speed, but all other vehicle systems will remain fully operational (i.e. power steering, brakes, etc).
3. When will Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service be available, and on what models?
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service will be available on select 2009 model year (MY) GM vehicles that begin production in the mid-year 2008. More than 1.6 million 2009 MY GM vehicles will have this capability, with Chevrolet accounting for approximately two thirds of the volume. Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is not available on any 2008 MY or older GM vehicles.
4. Why is OnStar limiting Stolen Vehicle Slowdown to stolen vehicles only?
OnStar already provides millions of its subscribers with its Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance service by using real-time GPS technology to attempt to locate an OnStar equipped vehicle when it has been reported stolen. Through Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance service, OnStar has helped authorities recover thousands of stolen vehicles.
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is an enhancement of our existing stolen vehicle services that presents significant societal benefits by reducing the risk of injuries, fatalities and property damages resulting from police pursuits involving stolen vehicles.
In stolen vehicle situations, OnStar knows whether the vehicle has the right equipment enabled and law enforcement has already been involved by the subscriber. The technology is impractical for use in other situations due to the time required for OnStar to assure itself that it can slow the vehicle down and that all necessary protections are in place.
5. Can a subscriber ask OnStar to slow down their own vehicle or someone else's vehicle?
OnStar will only slow a vehicle down in response to law enforcement's request if a stolen vehicle report has been filed by the subscriber and proper authorizations and verifications have been met.
6. Will Stolen Vehicle Slowdown be an added cost to an OnStar subscription?
There is no additional cost to subscribers associated with Stolen Vehicle Slowdown. This service is included in both the Safe & Sound and Directions & Connections plans. One year of Safe and Sound Service comes standard with the purchase or lease of most new GM vehicles. For additional information on OnStar's available service plans, please visit OnStar.com.
7. How can OnStar subscribers opt out if they decide they don't want their vehicle to have Stolen Vehicle Slowdown?
Stolen Vehicle Slowdown vehicles will be introduced on a limited list of 2009 MY GM vehicles. These vehicles start production in the middle of 2008. At that time, subscribers can request that Stolen Vehicle Slowdown be disabled on their vehicle. To do so, the subscriber must either press the blue OnStar button in their vehicle or contact OnStar with proper account verification and ask that the Stolen Vehicle Slowdown service be disabled. Disabling Stolen Vehicle Slowdown will not affect any of their other OnStar services.
8. What is the process for activating Stolen Vehicle Slowdown and how long will it take after an OnStar subscriber reports the vehicle stolen?

The following is the process for activating Stolen Vehicle Slowdown for vehicles equipped with OnStar that have an active OnStar account where the subscriber has not opted out of Stolen Vehicle Slowdown:
Once the vehicle has been reported stolen to law enforcement, the subscriber can call OnStar and request Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance.
OnStar will use real-time GPS technology to attempt to pinpoint the exact location of the stolen vehicle and provide this information to law enforcement to help them recover the vehicle.
When law enforcement has established a clear line of sight of the stolen vehicle, law enforcement may request OnStar to slow it down remotely.
Safeguards will be in place to ensure that the correct vehicle is slowed down.
OnStar then sends a remote signal to the vehicle that interacts with the Powertrain system to limit fuel flow to the engine which will slow the vehicle down gradually.
Although the time for this complete process will vary, the vehicle will begin to slow within seconds of the OnStar Advisor sending the slowdown signal to the vehicle.

The last one I had, the owner wasn't currently a subscriber to On-Star but the vehicle was equipped and she was still able to get On-Star to tell her the location of the vehicle.
