Hello,

I am new to this site, and I am looking for some information about the hiring process and the academy.

I am currently in the USAF and am looking to transition to the CHP in the near future. First of all, are there any curve balls that you can let me, and any other applicants for that matter, know about? I had a friend who told me that when he was at Beale, in Fairfield, he went through the academy and had a very hard time. He told me about one specific test in which the cadets had to guess the speed of a vehicle. Have any of you heard about or done this test?

Secondly, what type of competition is there to be accepted into to academy? Some background about me: I will have 6 years of military experience and my BS in Social Sciences at the end of my enlistment. Does anyone know if theses things will help me out? Also I read on the CHP website that they will not take into account my military experience until I give them a copy of my honorable discharge papers. I will not obtain these until the actual day I get out. Also, with respect to these papers, I will be applying for a conditional acceptance. If anyone has any information that can be helpful with regards to the discharge papers, please let me know.

My last question is for about the academy. I know that the CHP is described as a para-military career... what exactly does that mean? For those of you who have not gone thought military basic training, how was your experience? For those of you that have gone through Basic Training, what did you think of the program?

A future thanks for all of you who respond and I hope to write back to you soon.

The entire process is full of curve balls like anything in life but if you have the experience you are saying then you should have no problems. I was in the Air Force for 10 years and transitioned just fine. The academy is hard, not only because it lasts 6 months but also, and I think this is the biggest difference, you are fighting for this job unlike the military where they practically give it to you. That test you are referencing doesn't exist in the academy for cadets. I don't know about the competition but it is challenging to get in. The most challenging part will be the oral. Read on the internet and you should get a very good idea of exactly what kinds of questions you will get asked in your oral and how to properly answer them. I knew and had answers prepared for every question I was asked during the oral. I'm not sure what you mean that the CHP won't take into account your military experience... As far as the conditional acceptance that means that you still have a long way to go and if everything the CHP looks at meets their approval, you should be good to go. Para-military means that it's very similar to the military except with a few extra civil liberties you don't enjoy right now being in the military.
