Im going through the process right now, and I have been training by runing and situps and pushups and things. Well Im used to running 2-3 miles every day and today I could only do 1 mile and it wasnt even fast. It took me 12 min! I couldnt run today... what if I have a "slow day" in the acadamey (if i make it that far)?! How could I motivate my self to keep going during the run? Is it ok for me to slow down for a few days? :hitwall:

They will provide you with plenty of motivation.

The PT staff is very effective at pointing out the difference between aches and pains and injuries. Aches and pains suck it up, injuries (depending on severity) go have to go home to try again later.

At any rate the PT staff knows what they are doing. They strive to avoid injuries by not over training you (although it won't feel that way sometimes) and moving the pace of the program along at a rate that is surely uncomfortable, but very doable.

For your situation, I would suggest 1 or 2 days a week off from running and be careful about how much you increase your mileage week to week. Too much too soon can lead to "slow days," and slow days can result in a lack of motivation for some leading to a gap in training.

Good luck!

PS: I had a slow day at the academy once, the result of which fell right in the middle of the "sucks" category.

Haahaahaa...go back to some of my posts from over a year ago! You're sounding like me! Every athlete has off days, but I was in full freak-out mode because at the academy, you need to peak EVERY day! If it makes you feel any better, I've got a half marathon next week (& a full in December) and couldn't do 2 miles today without wheezing & stopping for air! Happens to everybody!
YOu might also be over-training. Yes, gotta do it & more at the academy, but be sure to work up to it, not start with it (of course I know nothing of where you're starting from...)
GOOD LUCK!

Off-days happen for a variety of reasons: lack of sleep (two boys, right?), over-training, wrong food in your system, etc. If you're running five days a week at a hard pace, consider doing a slower day every other day or trying a different cardio work out every other day (bicycle, elliptical, etc.). That way you'll give your heart a workout, but change from weight-bearing exercise to something a little less impactful to your legs/joints.

As for motivation, you'll be running in a pack at the Academy and singing cadence much of the time. Believe it or not, that's extremely motivating (at least, it was for me). As long as your goal is to do a little bit better each day that you're there, you'll make it.

Woke up quick, well before noon,
Just thought that I had to do some PT soon!
So we line up outside the gym,
'Cuz we gotta get sweaty before the day begins!

I don't think there are any training secrets. Nothing anyone says here will really prepare any of us to find out who we are, and when you reach your perceived limitations and think you can't go any further because of the pain, that is when you will learn about yourself. I hope all of us, every single person who attends, finds out that pain is temporary, fatigue is washed away by a good night's sleep, and sacrifice is necessary, but success and the completion of the academy and gaining officer status lasts a lifetime. And hey, don't forget, we will be getting PAID to suffer. At least we have that much eh?

Based on your process dates in your signature box you won't be in running the Academy in the next couple of weeks. It appears you have some time to prepare. Not to be a smart butt here: you are more likely to fail a spelling test and be required to remediate (ie. lose your weekend liberty and re-take the test). PT is actually something that you can use as the motivating tool to keep you going when the rest of the Academy environment might be dragging you down.

Once again, glass houses:doh:
Just thought it might be better coming from a fellow T.O. who has broken his share of windows.

I know I probably shouldn’t, but I take these forums a lot less seriously than I would a test at the academy. I just needed some PT advice but thanks for pointing that out and I will work on my spelling…
