Do they usually advertise to the general public that they will be holding these seminars? I haven't seen anything about them in the Coastal Division. I'll have to contact the local office here.Hey Welpe, you should get information in the mail if your divison is doing a seminar after they get your app. Hope all is well.

So who else is going to this "informational seminar" tomorrow night, 1/5/06, at the Embassy Suites in Arcadia? The little card you get in the mail doesn't say much, but I assume there will be some recruiters there to talk to us, but anyone who know's want to give an insite of the format for the 2 hours we'll be there (7pm-9pm)? Will there be cookies?

This will be a good learning experience. The Officer that put the night on for San Jose ended up being my BI. Learned a lot about the workings of the process and why things take so long. And SJ did not have any cookies. We only had steaks, right pupdog?. ;)

some good news for those who didn't go.
the written will now be graded!!! it will still be a pass/fail test, but you will be given a grade for it also(sat. will be the first time that this is done)

i was glad that i went and got to see a little of what i was going against. some of the people there really didn't look like they where ready, people who where way overweight and a guy that had a dishonarable discharge from the military(they told him that it wasn't an automatic fail, but i can imagine that it won't help any)

Kurt, do you remember that guy at the end that asked the CHP motocop question about how long it takes to become one? well i took a guess that it was you... i was wrong:lol: (i am going to PM you later on SVriders)

The video they showed about the academy seemed like they are really trying to scare you. I do understand it seems really stressful. Got a lot of useful information. But did you guys notice a lot of those people look like jokes to me and didn't seem to take it serious asking some dumb questions? It seemed like they coudln't stress enough about being in shape.

The Academy Blues video isn't intended to scare anyone. It really is about "telling it like it is". It shows an accurate glimpse into Academy life. Unfortunately, some people don't believe it and are unprepared for the harsh reality. Those are usually the ones who are responsible for the high attrition rate during the first few weeks. One interesting side note... One of the young officers interviewed in the video is now a Staff Officer at the Academy.

Exactly. The video is a great way of showing potential applicants what they're in for. It's good for preparation, and also helps weed out those who immediately realize that they're not cut out for that type of regimentation and discipline.

My first academy roommate would have benefitted from such preparation.....on the second or third day of the academy, the instructors gave us a rather graphic lecture and slide presentation about the job right before lunch. My roommate didn't go to chow, and when I got back to the room he was sitting on his rack with a dumbstruck look on his face. He looked up at me and said "You know - a guy could get HURT out there!". After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I asked "You didn't realize that until now?!?". I went back to class after lunch, and he went to the Staff Office and signed out. What a waste of time, money and an academy slot that could have gone to somebody who was better prepared!

Yeah, that video shows that we're not headed for a 6 month vacation. I was a little taken aback by the screaming of the academy officers at first, but then I was like *cool*, this is a no BS/politically-correct training course. They're serious as cancer. I've always wondered how I would handle doing a task with someone screaming at the top of their lungs right in my face. Hopefully I will get to find out.

That room was pretty full last night. I felt old (I'm 2:cool:. Seeing that made me realize that actually a very small percentage of the people who initially apply get accepted to the academy and graduate.

I LOVE that video! I've seen it several times now. At the QAP, they were playing it over & over again in the waiting room (as if we're not already nervous!). I'm glad the academy will have all that yelling. Yeah, it'll probably give me a headache and get stressful, but if you can't take the yelling from an instructor who wants you to succeed and only has everyone's best interests at heart, how will you take it from a 'customer?'
The morning of the PAT, a PT instructor gave us all a dose of what we're in for. That didn't shock me. What shocked me was that most of the applicants were shocked! All those saucer-eyes, dropped jaws, giggles. What the PT instructor had to say was actually very informative, and it's helped my preperation a great deal. I'm dong the same things when I work out, but appraching it differently, and it's made a huge difference.
When I hear about cadets quitting, it angers me so much! I want to get in so bad, and so do many other worthy candidates.

Remember guys, this is a professional organization and even though you are doing a PAT, you should still be presentable to the staff. (no hats/tank tops/etc.)

Darn, I wanted to show off my guns at the PAT. Just kidding.

What I liked best was at the end, Officer Jones summed up the reason behind why the hiring process, the BI and the academy is so intense when she said: they give you a gun and a car and pretty much turn you loose on the world. The state of CA is giving you a lot of responsibility, and they need to make damn sure that you are the type of person who can handle that responsibility.

What everyone else said about Academy Blues is the truth -- the video is no exaggeration, it was filmed with real classes and is completely accurate.

Regarding the written, I'm not aware of anything changing. The essay portion has always been assigned a grade (see the applicant study guide (http://www.chp.ca.gov/recruiting/asg/asg.pdf)). The test however, is counted as pass/fail. That is, the "score" you get, as long as it is passing, will not benefit you later on.

This is soooooo true. The funny thing is, one of the officers on the video, is very close personal friend of mine, and has been helping me through this entire hiring process. He made me watch the video before my QAP, and he sat me down and made sure I understood (as much as I could at that point), what I was going into. He has been a huge influence.

Dont feel old, I passed the WT and went on to the PAT's. Im now 34...

Got DQ'ed due to my vision. I was less then a 20/40 when I applied (so my eye doc says) but I could not pas the VAT at the tests. Dissapointed is not the words to use. But never the less, I go in for LASIK's next week so hopefully I can go thru the next testing rout in April for coastal.

Being that I passed the WT's lets me in until I am 36 (or so the BI officer told me at the PAT's)...

Just out of curiosity, why not just soft contacts? My vision is about 20/40, and I use glasses when working. I've asked about LASIK, and every doc I've talked to laughs at me because my vision is already so "good," relatively speaking. SCL for a year would also satisfy the requirements.

Once you pass the written, it is good for A-either 10 years or B-life. I have heard both. So, you should be fine either way.

To clarify, yes, the written test is good for your life. Even if you have passed the written however, you must get into an application cycle prior to your 36th birthday. Passing the written is not an open invitation to apply when you're 40, for example. The date the testing cycle begins is the date of the written test.

Benmin, you will still have to submit an application and get into a cycle with a written test date prior to your 36th birthday. You won't have to take the written again, but should you fail to complete any portion of the process, you would not be allowed to reapply.

I was also present at the seminar in Acadia. I thought the Academy Blues video was great. I loved the part where all the new cadets are lined up next to the gym wall, and suddenly the doors kick open and about a dozen or so Staff Officers come marching out and start getting into everyone's face... Kodak Moment.

When will the next semminar be in SouthernCal?

Call the Southern Division office in Glendale @ (81:cool: 240-8200 and ask for a recruitment officer. The next seminar will be on 01-17-06, starting 6pm, at the Central LA CHP Office.

Nope, they don't check, so I assume everyone is welcome. I brought one of my friends along that's thinking of applying.

Anytime. Hey I was thinking, if you, Krush and I get closer (ie: pass backgrounds), we should all get together and meet each other over In & Out or something. I don't know if that would be something you'd be interested inbut I think it might be cool. It would be nice to know some familiar faces should we all end up in Sac.

DW,
Well I need to have worn them for a year prior to the VAT, I have not. Being that I want to make this MAJOR career change sooner then later (at least a conditional hire), there really is no time for the 1 year requirement. I tried SCL for 6 months (torric lenses) and was not at all happy with the results not to mention that as of this point I work in a very hot, dry, greasy environment. This was another factor as to why I was not able to wear the SCL. I found out just yesterday that I am eligible for the LASIK treatment and have scheduled it for this coming Saturday. Wish me luck.

DW,
Thank you for clarifying this for me!! Now let me ask you this, should I NOT send in the letter to The Standards Division to appeal my DQ due to my vision? I have it in an envelope ready to go out tomorrow. As you mention that if Ifail any portion of the process, I wont be able to reapply.

If all I need to do is re-apply, from this point, I can just go to the Monterey office and get another application tomorrow afternoon. The cut off date for this is in March. I will continue to apply with the MCSO to plan out my LE optionsas a career.

I would love to speak to you about my options in detail. PM me if you want to talk...

My thinking was that the LASIK still requires a one year observation period following surgery, so you may as well wait the year with soft contacts. You will not be allowed to begin the Academy until that year is up and the State doc signs off on the LASIK being stable.

I think I'm missing something (not anything new) because you mentioned appealing the vision DQ. Send me a PM with details of your situation, if you'd like.

I had the LASIX two years ago. When I went in I was 20/40 in both eyes. As soon as the procedure was done, I was 20/20. When I went in for my 1 week follow up, I was 20/15. That is where it stabilized...20/15. I had been thinking about the surgery for about 3 years before I finally did it. When it was done, I kept asking myself, "Why in the hell did I wait so long?"

By the way...My Doctor was one of the pioneers in LASIX and teaches the procedure all over the world.
