Well all of you dont know but i'm currently going through a divorce, (DW Can you help me out). And shes a bit sour and bitter towards me and I'm afraid that when the BI Contacts her she will try to hurt my chances. My question is if everybody you BI talk to talk very highly of you and only 1 person doesnt (that person being the ex) how bad will your chances suffer due to that? Or given that response will my BI look further into why she is so upset and why she was the only one to talk bad? Im' not a bad guy by no means but i'm guilty of leaving. anyways also my second question...If for some reason i get disqualified, (i'm going to reapply of course!) will my Veterans Preference Point be applied or are the a one time use thing? Like they were applied to my QAP, but will they be applied if I go through a second time? Thanks fellas and sorry for such a long long question. Thank you in Advance.

Soon2B, first the easy question, yes, your veterans points will apply IF you apply later.

Regarding your background, relax! As SB said, you're not the first person to be in this situation. Each background case is unique and your investigator will do just that -- investigate. As I've said before, be honest, be honest, and be honest. You'll have a chance to explain what's going on at your initial interview.

.......you would have never been accepted to the academy?

I guess I'm lucky that my ex gf will probably be my best asset during my BI as she's an ex-cop herself.

I was in your same position when I went through my background and she was beyond pissed. The investigators take a lot into consideration when they contact old girl friends or ex-wife's and in my case it didn't slow me down at all. I told him about her and her anger right away and he was ready when he spoke to her and her family.

In a previous background, my ex husband was a huge asset. I have no idea about ex boyfriends; I never ever ever EVER contact any. I was suprised that CHPs background packet didn't have a spot to fill in a current or past boy/girlfriend. Guess they got tired of sour apples. If BIs took what ex's said at face value, there would be no law enforcement on this planet!
I had to bump a friend from my friends list to put my boyfriend in there (I almost forgot him!).

This has been an interesting topic. I would assume that you would have to convince background investigators and psychologists that such a thing would not have an overly negative impact on your life -- that it would not overly affect your work as a peace officer.
