Hmmm....I guess that means I won't be going to work this week. Instead I'll be standing by at my mailbox  . In all seriousness I will be anxiously checking the mail from now on.
Did you guys receive any kind of confirmation that you passed your psych test (letter, phone call, etc.)?
I've got nothing (good or bad) since I got my letter stating I'm good to go on my medical.

Congrats to everybody that has recieved a invite letter. I'm hoping for an invite letter soon for the October academy as well. I just finished my pysch interiew about 2 weeks ago and it may take awhile to get all the papers processed before I get a chance. Until then I will check and keep checking the mail with anticipation. So now the stress part of the hiring process really starts.

Along with my packet, I received an invitation to an Orientation on Sunday the 14th from 1000 to 1200 hours - is this the only orientation, or will there be another that afternoon? How many are planning on attending? Anyone interested in getting together for lunch or dinner afterwards?

I will probably go..
But here is a riddle for you guys...
In the packet there was a sizing sheet. I wear size 33 waist pants. When I measured myself with a tape it shown 37 1/2 inches:hitwall:. I was like no way. Then measured the my pants waist radius, they measured 37 inches. All my pants measured close to 37 inches . I Don't know what to put on my waist size?
I know size 37 pants will not fit me. Anyone got a clue.. Check it out yourself..

Consider going to a tailor and having yourself measured and using their numbers. They know the spots and how to measure you. Much better than guessing if you have done it right. We've always used the tailors numbers, and other than the uniforms becoming baggy after a couple weeks there, they have been correct.

My BI (here in Fresno) said there will be, but he said his Sergeant hadn't even got the list of who was getting invited yet, so he'll be getting back to me/us to let us know when and where it is going to be (he said generally the Thursday before).

Food for thought. Prudential has been the supplier for years and has a good understanding of how their uniforms fit, what you will be doing in that uniform and the changes your body is likely to go through, especially at the beginning. Granted they don't always get every fit correct, a majority are correct. The uniform is not meant to fit so you will look good. A tailor is going to size you for one of their suits that fits you at that moment.

I went to the Fresno location and they were very helpful. They not only measured me but had me try on pants and shirts to find the right size... they measured for the neck and arm lengths but the rest was just sizes for the rest... They also faxed the sheet to Sacramento for me. I called yesterday to confirm receipt, which they happily confirmed they got it, and everything would be ready... Fingers Crossed!
Question: Snowdog or DW, is there an approximate projected size of CTC III-07?
Thanks in advance!!!!!!!
In our case, the Jr. cadet used a tailor, and the cadet uniform fit well... for the first 2 weeks. Something about the training table? He lost 10 lbs each the first and second weeks, and another 10 over weeks 3 and 4. Just cinch up the belt....

Great, I also went to the fresno location. The young ladies were very helpuful, I tried on some pants and a shirts also. They must have giving me the one you tried on since they smelled like Oakhurst. I knew i was not a 37 waist. I'm a 33 but the pants that i decided on were 34x32 and a large shirt. I guess that will do. I found a website were you can get some thorogood boots. I bought mine for 110 shipped. I'll get or start a new thread with the link soon.

New reader, first time poster. I tested in GG Div 5/20. They told us they were speeding up the process and wanted to get us in for Oct also. I had my CVSA last week and my BI is finishing up my BI (make sense?) right now. No med. or psych yet. I'm thinking more like Jan.
Also, our numbers: 600 or so tested, 135 showed up for the PAT, 120 for the psych, 60 got through to BI's.
Overall, I was told they were aiming for 240 in a class. Looks like GG will only contribute 40-50 of that 240.
Congrats to all who made it and I will see you one way or another on the good side.
Also, thanks for a great site and info from chippies and others in the know.

For those of you who got the Rocky's, I spent about 2 hours last night trying to strip the factory polish off the whole boot. I used paint thinner (had mineral spirits in it) and a rag. I have never done this before, so I don't have much to compare it to, but it seemed to work ok. It took the "plastic" shine off the boot and I'm assuming that's what I'm going for.
There are so many websites out there that describe different polishing procedures, but nothing too detailed about stripping them...so hopefully mine are ready for polish...
Here's one of the websites I'm using: Boot Shinning (http://www.stompersboots.com/stompers_bootcare.php)
After I get them polished up I'll post pictures for comparison.

I believe the "plastic shine" (described here: Boots (http://www.chpforums.com/forum/showpost.php?p=26441&postcount=107)) is a standard protective coat they put on to keep the boots from drying out before they are sold (as well as give them a glossy "buy me" look). It's not a real obvious shine.
If you get some mineral spirits (or others have suggested alcohol) you can rub it on the boot in one spot and see if you start to see the boot looking less shinny (for mine it is kind of descrete, but you can feel a more leathery feel when the glossy coat is off). I was considering just trying to shine them without stripping them, but some of the guys in the boot post (http://www.chpforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=526)seem to emphasize its value, so I went ahead and did it. Hopefully its worth it!

I have some older Danners, and recently bought the Rocky's 5066 for the academy. I stripped off the Rocky's, but I am having trouble shinning them. I used the same method on both boots, and got a greater shine off the Danner's. Maybe I did something wrong on the Rocky's because they are pure dull. :noidea: I'll continue to see if it gets any better.

Ok, so we are on for starting dinner... I will do a little research and come up with a couple options and go from there.. I am not saying I don't want the pizza, but might not be the best idea the night before reporting??? :hitwall:
If anyone else has suggestions, would love to entertain ideas and then we can all put our .02 in!
Here is another great example of the power of this forum... CTC III-07 is already starting to bond and work together 6 weeks before reporting to the academy! This wouldn't be possible without this forum!!! Thank you all who make it possible!!!!!!!

The cadets of CTC II-07 met up the night before at the local Hard Rock Cafe. It was really nice, they set us all up in a private banquet room at no extra charge and allowed split checks too. It's in down town Sac and only took about 10-15 minutes from the academy.
Most of the cadets met up after the orientation was over and then all drove to dinner. So there is another option for you guys! Congrats to you all!!!

09-03-2007, 04:31 PM
OK so I love the Hard Rock Cafe idea... if guys want to second that idea, I would be happy to contact and work on pre setting that up..... so all we would have to do is would you prefer a lunch after the morning orientation, or a dinner at a specific time? We would more than likely have to get a close count put together, but if you all like the idea and I call, I will ask what kind of flexibility we can have on numbers!
I think I would vote for dinner.... I have family coming for the orientation, don't want to send them packing because I was running off to something else!
This sounds great..... Have to throw this in again... its only 41 days away, time is flying by, but I still want it to go faster!

OK so to honor PapaBear and follow his valuable advise, should we aim for 6pm? that way we can have plenty of time to eat, meet, mingle and then head to bed for the last sleepless night of anticipation before meeting the forces of "Camp Snoopy" head on in the morning?
6 p.m. works. It gives us time to check into our hotels, etc., after the orientation. Thanks for heading this up, Oakhurst!

Eat an enormous bean and cheese burrito and drink a milkshake. Then go out and drink a couple beers and have a few Bacardi 151 and cokes. Go to bed at 3 AM. Enjoy
Don't forget to smoke two packs of Marlboros that night too. It will help calm your nerves for the next day.:lol::lol:

My pleasure! I called and the room is reserved.. I just need to keep updating the coordinator there with head count...
Also, he is emailing me their group menu info which he says works really well. that way all of your food drink (excluding alcohol) and gratuity is all combined into one price... What you see is what you pay... the check splitting is that much easier for everyone... so if you want to add your guest count PM me, and include your email address if you want me to forward the menu info...
thanks and I really hope we get a good group

Sign my wife and I up, we'll be there.

Just thought I'd put in a little input here...my hubby is in CTC II-07 and has the Thorogoods. They have been pretty good boots, the soles wore down A LOT on his pivot foot from drill, but that is probably pretty normal. He just bought Rockys for range to try them out since his roomie has them and he seems to like them a lot. The one thing that he really likes about his Thorogoods is that they are not insulated so therefore have been better with the hot summer days. You guys shouldn't run into too much heat, but I thought I'd let you know what has worked for him. He said a lot of the guys have some boots by Oakley and they seem like good boots.
Good luck to all of you...If no one has told you, make sure you get your wives/SO's to get on the Myspace CHP Wives group. This experience can be just as hard for us at times as it is for you! There is tremendous support on that group for them while you are away.

 ok again w/ like aaejae the group is PRIVATE not a secret, but also trying not advertise it in an open forum. It is by invite only & not viewable by the public. I use PM'S here to talk to wives/s.o here & wait to see how it goes before invite happens. During week 1 or 2 officers on this forum came out to advise us wives not post anything that create a nexxus for our law enforcement lives. They were very helpful for us newbie wives. So (personal information removed) I'll send you a message k? Also SNOWDOG gave us the idea of index cards filled w/ your personal info to exchange @ your division's orientation. Loved that idea & will be using for the spousal panel appt. I think that support for your wife/s.o is a good idea. I have met some awesome people that I would have never known otherwise. Anyhow give your s.o a chance to meet others. Love your dinner get together idea too. BEST WISHES to you all CTC III-07. Is it OCTOBER yet?

In regards to what Rayni said about the Myspace CHP wives group: please feel free to PM any of the wives/SO's on here who have talked about it, we would love the spouses to join. The only problem with advertising it here is that Myspace has their private groups set up in such a way that you can't just search for the group and request a membership; you have to be a 'friend' of someone who is a current member, and then they can invite you to join. I know some people who have gone hunting for it and gotten frustrated; please PM Rayni, Raemee, Ber, myself or any other wife/SO on here who has mentioned that they are part of the group. We'd be happy to invite you.

We are a "tight-knit" group - but we know how to play nice!
On a serious note, this forum and the "myspace wives group" have truly been a godsend for me. It is tough on the family to have "Dad" away for 27 weeks, and tough on "Mom" to run a household with two teenage boys, three dogs, and a harris' hawk on her own, and work a 50+ hour "high stress" job!!
When: my refrigerator went out, the pool equipment broke, the sprinklers broke (the lawn is dying), the radiator in the car blew, the local PD showed up at the house because our oldest son's car was reported in a "toilet papering" incident (no joke!), and grandpa was in the hospital, it was so nice to be able to "complain, scream, and whine" to my "girls" so that when my cadet called that night I could say "Everything is just fine at home honey!!! You're doing a great job, keep it up!!"
The support system is awesome! I encourage all the spouses/SO's to get involved!
We are about three weeks from graduation and the time really does fly by.... Congrats to all of you heading into CTC III - 07! Stay strong!!
All the best to you!

Hi All,
I got my letter back at the end of August, but didn't have time to post until now because I just got married on Friday! Anyway, I am looking forward to meeting everyone and going through this experience with all of you. My wife and I would like to come to the dinner at the Hard Rock if there are still openings. Also, for whoever is doing the boot count, I have Rockys. By the way, I haven't seen any postings for our class from anyone in Southern California. Is anyone out there, or am I the only one so far? One month left to bust our butts until the real fun starts........can't wait!

Yours are looking good, the toe area really stands out! I worked on mine for quite a while last night and I think they are looking pretty good:
http://www.theyetters.com/hosting_np/boots/IMG_0376.jpg
http://www.theyetters.com/hosting_np/boots/IMG_0380.jpg
In contrasting yours with mine: You really focused an the toe (and it looks good), I stripped down and have been polishing my whole boot...am I "messing it up" or wasting my time? I don't know if mine look as shinny because there isn't the contrast with the rest of the boot :noidea:
At this point I really don't know what more to do (.except more of the same and hope I'm doing "ok")
I have a system of:
-Applying light (<--relative I guess) polish with wet cloth
-Melt polish (lighter)
-Buff melted polish with clean wet cloth
And then do it over again. I don't know if I should be doing less polish, more polish, or more buffing...or if they are shinny enough or if I'm not even close. I guess I'll just keep doing what I'm doing until I get to the Academy and I'm sure they'll let me know if there is more to be done

I just do the toe and heel of the boot in a spit shine. i know its not pictured but my heels look just like the toes. the rest of the boot is just polished with a buff brush thats why it looks that way. honestly i polish them that way because its a traditional Marine Corps spit shine, and is very common in a military boots used for drill/inspection shines. So I am in the same boat as you I hope my shine is acceptable inside the walls:lol::cool:. however if i could make a suggestion i would try not light the polish on fire. boot polish has a certain amount of oils in it; by setting it on fire or melting it you deplete the polish of those natural oils making it more difficult for you to shine. the oils and waxes are very important because you are not polishing the boot leather but actually polishing the polish itself. the shine you have going looks like what is usually called a bull shine, or "bulling" a boot which is a traditional European shine, and very common in Great Britain and Australia. Either way i am guessing a shiney boot is a shiney boot........ then again , last time i had that shiney boot idea i had a long talk with a very unfriendly Marine Drill Instructor:evil::hitwall::hitwall::sad::tape::tape ::doh:. but who knows maybe we are both wrong.

Echoing what 23112 said, don't just polish the toe. Try and polish most of the boot area.

.... and out of the Academy .
Echoing what 23112 said, I put my freshly edge dressed boots on a piece of 8 and 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper. Unless you like the outline of your boot forever imprinted on your dorm room floor as a testament of your stupidity for all future cadets to see.
And whatever you do don't melt shoe polish in the tin and try to blow the flame out near the curtains like one of my quad mates did. It makes a mess that never comes out.

I'm in. Will see you all on the 14th/15th. Erm...what is edge dressing please? Common sense would tell me that it's some sort of additional product used to make the sides of the soles look good, but I have never seen this in the store.
It would also appear that I may have jacked up my boots a bit. When using the rubbing alcohol to remove the silicon, I applied too much elbow grease and, I believe, wore off some of the actual pigment on the boot. Although a lot of shining has mostly taken care of this problem, there are still some small, swirly scratches that just won't seem to come out. I guess I'll have to deal with some extra attention because I can't afford to buy a new pair.
Until then.

Beg to differ with you on that. We found it hard to find edge dressing & to find people who knew what we were talking about. May also depend on where you live too. We went to Target, Big name shoe stores, & military surplus stores, but couldn't find it. Finally, at a local ma/pa shoe repair shop we found that they carried the edge dressing, but were OUT OF STOCK. We waited it out til their supply came in. Lucky for you early notice appicants/cadets you will have more time to find the items you need. My cadet had 17 days til reporting to Camp Snoopy. Congrats to you incoming cadets.

Is it necessary to use the edge dressing? I was in the USCG and although we shined our boots, I never stumbled upon anyone who was preoccupied with making sure the edges looked good. It was always just the toe and, to some extent, the heel. Would it not work to simply use some shoe polish and a brush along the sides, in the case that I am unable to locate this elusive and mysterious product?

Edge dressing = Liquid Shoe Polish
23112
09-23-2007, 07:58 PM
Edge dressing simply "dresses" the "edges" of your soles. Don't put it on your whole boot. After marching around, your soles lose their original lustre and shine. Edge dressing makes them dark and shiny again.
If there is a military store anywhere where you are you can find it, my hubby had some still from when he was in the Marine Corps that he used on his dress shoes-coreaframs (I think that is how you spell it I have never had to spell it before).

Uniformity....same reason your shoes/boots must be black....ties blue, socks blue, etc... get used to it, if you are successful, you have a career of it ahead of you!
I though socks were black... White for PT/PMA?

does anyone happen to know what this orientation on the 14th is going to consist of? Is it mandatory? I'm stressing 'cause my BI is no longer a BI and I've been out of town for quite a while and realized that I gotta rsvp by monday to get into the orientation and the packet said to rsvp through your BI. I'm assuming that the CHU will have answers for me but I was just wondering what people on the forum thought....

It is helpful for family, so they have a clue what you are doing. They also pass out a lot of information. (Suggestions to wives, husbands, SOs, bring pencils, pens and paper to write on.) If you have never been to the academy yet, it gives you a peek.

Ya I'm gonna try and make it to the orientation considering i'll need whatever information i can get. Fortunately my former roommate went through the academy while we lived together so he's given me some good info and he gave me the grand tour when he graduated so i'm familiar with the grounds of the academy but i know i'll definitely need whatever info they can throw at me, especially the day before i report. its time to get excited now:lol:

Anyone else bringing their kids to the orientation on Sunday? We are planning on bringing ours but they are all young (5, 3, and 6 months) so I'm not sure if they'll be too much of a distraction or not.Just so you know, there is a LOT of information dispersed. They will talk about family support information, retirement information, insurance information, information the cadet will need to have in hand the first couple days, etc... Having to handle 3 kids while writing all this down can be difficult. It is really boring to a child under 15! Let alone a 5 yo. It will be about 2 hours of sitting while staff members and Human Resources talk about various things important to the cadet and spouse. I would suggest getting a sitter for the orientation. Consider this, would you bring children to your job orientation? That really is what this is.

If you're asking about the Academy....YES!
Thank you. Quick question...is it normal to be scared out of your mind?I think its more abnormal NOT to be scared.
Let's see, for CTC I-07, an applicant realized what he was getting into on the drive to the academy on pick up day and turned around and went home.
CTC II-07, an applicant made it to the front door on Monday am, paced back and forth suitcase in hand, walked back to his car and left.
Yes, it is perfectly normal.

YES you should be scared.:wink:. In all honesty your feelings are quite normal. I still remember almost every single minute of pick up day. I was scared but I was also very excited. You are starting a 27 week journey that you will remember for the rest of your life. This is the time when you create the best friendships of your life. Is it hard, Hell ya. Is it scary, Hell yeah. Does it feel impossible at times to do some of the things you will be required to do throughout the academy, HELL ya. But trust me, It is all worth.
All the blood, sweat and tears that drop on those academy grounds is worth it in the end. Just stay focused and motivated and you will do fine. Help each other out as much as you can. You may be a wiz at the academics but really struggle at PT. Or you may be the opposite, you may run like a freakin gazelle but struggle with the homework. Recognize your strengths and weaknesses and help each other out. There is no way you will get through this academy by yourself.
Good luck, keep your head up and most of all have fun. Oh ya, I hated when people said this to me but I have to "Stand By"

I went through in 2003. Pick up day was probably the single-most frightening event of my life. NOT doing it or going through it. It was the anticipation. Driving there. Getting out of the car. Seeing the line of cadets. Walking to the line. Once in the line - - -ain't nothin' but to do it!!!

Today is the first day of the rest of their careers. They can do this. It will not be easy, and for a while (at least the next couple weeks) it will not be fun! Good luck to all, cadet and family!

This is standard attrition. It will increase as the holidays approach, especially for cadets early in the training cycle. In the past, the Academy has avoided starting cadet classes in December.
In addition to the usual "non-hackers" the holidays get everyone warm and fuzzy. Around December, they start thinking about parties, warm fires, and drinking eggnog. 0530 PT in the cold dark night just doesn't seem as inviting, so the weak come up with some lame excuse and pack it in.
Then comes January and the realization that they are still in the same unsatisfying situation that caused them to apply for the CHP in the first place. They traded a few parties and easy nights for a long, rewarding, and honorable career.
Makes no sense, really, but it happens every year. So, as Mom wisely points out, its time to look at the big picture and hang in there. The rewards are well worth it!!!

12 in 3 weeks is not too terribly bad. Shoot, I think we lost more than that in just the first week in my class. Keep your chins up III-07, we want and need you on the road.

We want and need the ones that are not quitters!!! That can muscle through a little discomfort and deal with it. Any chippie who has had to do 11-84 all night in the rain knows what I'm saying.

Seeing the lucky cadets in the Cadet Blogs on the CHP website makes me so jealous. Hopefully I'll be in there getting chewed out by Staff next year.
