38. A low speed DUI chase occurs during a ride-a-long and the experienced officer/deputy loses any aspect of sanity beyond driving the car. Have no fear for your are and expert; Six months of 8hr classes on Saturdays have prepared you. You call the pursuit until a secondary car gets in to position, when the pursuit stops you stop the patrol car from running in to the suspect's car because it is still in drive. When the Watch Sgt shows up she comes straight up to you in the patrol car and asks, "Well how was you 1st Pursuit"? You let her know it was an invigorating experience that you learned a lot from and nothing more then that. On the ride back to the station the deputy/officer almost kills himself, the suspect and you by running a red light because he was so freaked out by the pursuit. Luckily the one car that was cross traffic was able to swerve and avoid the accident. The drunken suspect tells you "Don't worry I won't tell" When you get to the station you help clean up the car, get paperwork together, find the deputy/officers POV keys because they got lost during the chase and finally say good night after telling the deputy/officer that is cool and you understand stuff happens some times.

Two days later when you come in to do some finger printing the Explorer adviser asks for your Explorer ID, she says that you shouldn't have talked to the Watch Sgt before the deputies got the opportunity to.

Now thats how you know your an Explorer.

P.S This happened about 7 years ago and it was not CHP.

I was an LAPD explorer in the early 1970's. We got to issue LA City bicycle licenses. Sometimes we'd get to work a parade or maybe the front desk or if we were real lucky, a ride-a-long with the Sgt. Biggest thing we got to do was go on the Christmas trip to Tijuana and see the Border Patrol and the Tijuana PD jail. OH BOY! I guess things have changed a little since then.

All of these are quite true. I am currently an Explorer Cadet with the CHP (OOHHH RAHHH) and I am planning on making the trip up to Sacremento this year for EIII

I have a tendency to ask people to back away from me using the 3 foot rule.

Everytime I go to a public place, more than likely a restaurant I try and sit near an exit while facing the front door.

The one I do the most though, is watching people's hands and reading body language. People always wonder why I am on edge, and I have no explanation, its second nature.
