I understand that chp works 5-8's. Could someone tell me if they rotate from nights to days to swings on a regular or if your duty hours stay the same until you request a change?

This depends on the office SOP. Some offices rotate shifts so that officers are not always stuck on one shift. However, in other offices it is based on seniority and you get what you get when the shift sheet gets posted.

I would venture to say most training/junior offices are seniority-based. Low seniority will mean swings or graves.
