The following set of videos is a very comprehensive overview of what happened in North Hollywood on February 28, 1997. Very crazy stuff. Makes me want to get some insane body armor...

Was CHP called in for backup at all, or did this involve strictly the LAPD? Was anyone on here working a beat near the incident?

Strictly an LAPD operation. They did not even call in the LASD to assist. It was fortunate that none of the good guys died - and that includes civilians.

I heard most of that incident as it happened on a scanner and watched hours of it on live TV.

Wow. Yeah, I was amazed that only the two gunmen were killed.

I was only eleven years old when this occurred, so while a lot of you may have seen and remembered this as it happened, I only have a vague recollection of it. I guess that’s why I am compelled to post threads about it!

Yeah I'm surprised they handled it by themselves, but it lasted 45 minutes which isn't much in the grand theater. There's a place that looks _just_ like that, key kiosk and everything in San Diego.

As an aside, the LAPD retained at least one of their units that was involved in this incident. It's used as an instructional aid at their academy and is occasionally displayed to the public to serve as a grim reminder of that day.

Also, a 42 minute recording of LAPD scanner traffic from this incident can be downloaded here:

If you listen, you can hear that they did request CHP assistance to shut down nearby freeways as the suspects were preparing to go mobile.
